I have a love/hate relationship with Winter, by which I do not mean a period of the year in one hemisphere or the other but
rather that season of cold, ice and snow that some of us in certain climes must contend with.

Winter is a harsh season. At its best it is annoying, a supplier of copious amounts of inconvenience.
At its worst it is deadly, a supplier of tragedy and grief. We puny humans have no choice but to respect
its power.

But we must also admit that Winter is not without its charms. We must admit that Winter possesses its own unique beauties.

Today the wind is howling. The trees dance to its tune and the snow cavorts in eddies and streamers. It is beautiful.

Of course, it helps that I am appreciating this beauty from behind a window, inside a heated home and content in the knowledge
that I've no need to go anywhere today if I do not wish it (I don't). I am looking forward to an afternoon of couch napping and
football games (presuming the electricity doesn't go out). My best wishes, thoughts and hopes to those who cannot appreciate
Winter's beauty this day because they are too busy trying to survive it. But best wishes also to those who, this day, are comfortable
enough to enjoy the privilege of looking out the window with awe.

So what is your relationship with Winter?

"Winter" by Greta Crosby

Let us not wish away the winter.
It is a season it itself,
Not simply the way to spring.

When trees rest, growing no leaves, gathering no light,
They let in sky and trace themselves delicately against dawns and sunsets.

The clarity and brilliance of the winter sky delight.
The loom of fog softens edges, lulls the eyes and ears of the quiet,
Awakens by risk the unquiet.
A low dark sky can snow, emblem of individuality, liberality, and aggregate power.
Snow invites to contemplation and to sport.

Winter is a table set with ice and starlight.

Winter dark tends to warm light: fire and candle;
Winter cold to hugs and huddles; winter want to gifts and sharing;
Winter danger to visions, plans, and common endeavoring --
And the zest of narrow escapes; winter tedium to merrymaking.

Let us therefore praise winter,
Rich in beauty, challenge, and pregnant negativities.

Totally.

I hate winter with a searing passion. The cold and damp wreak havoc on my old injuries, I don't like driving in this crap, and the frequency of weather related 'service calls' to my GF's house goes up (pipes frozen, ice dam causing roof leaks, etc). I'm a veteran of '77, '93, and the October Surprise. I lived 15+ years in Utah (The Greatest Snow on Earth was on its plates for years), and worked in Wyoming, so I know snow.

Why don't I move somewhere warmer? Florida gets too hot and muggy, same for Georgia, etc. (and I'm a Northerner). I considered Arizona/New Mexico, but desert heat also has issues. I'd like to find somewhere that's mid-autumn year-round. Warm, not hot days and cool evenings. Winter sucks balls.

I hate absolutely every fucking thing about it.

It makes my skin break out and the wind makes cuts on my skin.
I have to bundle up and I keep going from cold to sweating to death.
I walk so I have to deal with the freezing fucking cold and being frozen by the time I get to where I need to be.
The ice causes me to almost break a leg.
The white stuff is just ugly and cold.

I hate, hate, hate it. There is nothing at all good about it.

I was on a backroad today between towns. Drifting snow looked like sand dunes taking over the roads. The wind whipping it further into both lanes from the top looked like dust flying from a neglected room. The snow dunes looked like the folds and crevices of a lengthy termite mound. It was beautiful.

I love winter, there are things I like also in other seasons but winter is the season I have the best memories.
When I was a child there had been some snowy years, I remember snowplows used to clean only the public road and not the one that lead to the group of houses I used to live, the slope was a perfect sledge track after four or five cars had passed and pressed part of the snow, so me and some other kids spent most of the afternoon walking up and sliding down, than in the school yard snow used to be pressed on some walls and in the afternoon we used to sneak in the scholl with shovels and buld some fortress to play snowball battles during morning break.
The best weather for me is in february when one day it snows a lot and the next day it's sunny so you can enjoy the snow but the air is hot. In the advent time there are christmas markets where you can gather, drink a glass of mulled wine and meet people. Then there is skiing (alpine nordik or whatever) that is the funniest activity in the world.

You want the coastal Pacific Northwest from the California wine country up to Seattle. Just be prepared to pay for that perfect weather.

I've had a love/hate relationship with winter this year. Though I don't generally mind snowfalls, as long as I don't have to shovel the wet, heavy stuff. This year has been particularly brutal since it's been so frikky frakky FREEZING out there. One day it can be just below freezing, yesterday for example; tomorrow it's dropping to 40 below (slight wind chill). We're talking a difference of 70 degrees here folks!!

Now I'm fully aware I live in Canada, land of igloos and snowshoes. But you know it's bad when they announce that the coldest day in your home town (Mister Man) beats the coldest day ever on Mars. Or that where we now live is colder than Santa's own North Pole.

'Nuff said

I don't put much stake in an afterlife but if there is an afterlife . . . if there is justice in the afterlife, then the perpetrators
of Windows 8 will be sentenced to putting together a one hundred trillion piece, mono-color, jigsaw puzzle. And they won't
be told that a piece is missing. BWAH! HA! HA! HA!

Great poem too.

Wow. Lots of Winter hatred out there. I understand. I hate brushing off the car and waiting for it to warm up.
I hate driving on icy roads and the single digit temps but seriously can none of you grant it any credit for being a
season who's beauty stands up to any other season? And you can have some serious fun in the snow. Oh well,
just remember, people in hot climes will never appreciate Spring the way we do.

I currently live in Central California so my winter is much different than my past winters. I have to say that I miss the snow, and the crisp clean smell of the snowfall, but I'm making do just fine without it. :)

I spent yesterday walking miles on the beach and viewing the sunset with only a light jacket. I'll take California winter over my previous Northeastern winters any day.
