Do you really think that way about all refugees and immigrants seeeking a better life, or just the Muslim ones? Maybe it's that I'm an American, and 99%+ of Americans have ancestors from other countries, but I don't see why it's a sin for someone to escape a bad situation and make a better life for themselves.

The facts relating to asylum seekers here revealed in the moving story you linked to have already been overtaken by events. When the new right wing Govt took office here last Sept, one of its main aims was to "Stop the Boats". This Govt continued the previous Govt's policy that no asylum seeker arriving by boat will be accepted for migration into Australia. The new Govt's policy now focuses on attacking the 'people smugglers', stopping the boats has become a military operation run by the Defence forces and a virtual news black out imposed. Asylum seekers are reduced to collateral damage in the 'war' against 'people smugglers'. In short things have become a whole lot worse. Personally I find this entire enterprise sickening. I am at a loss to understand why people fleeing persecution their homelands are such a political hot potato here in Australia. I suspect that it stirs xenophobic and racist fears still staining the national psyche. Many of us thought that these nasty tendencies had died out with the demise of the White Australia policy years ago, and emphasised in the rejection of One Nation/Hansonism by the electorate. We were too optimistic it seems. Sadly Australia has a long way to go to free itself from the ugly diseases of racism and xenophobia.
