Rasciallymisty uses IE 11. When she uses the Reply button, word wrap does not work. She uses the Enter button button at the end of line and so her posts come out like this: http://www.collarchat.com/fb.asp?m=4624665

1. Is there anything that can be done to make wrap work in IE?

2. Word wrap is fine in Chrome and Firefox - is there someone willing to walk her through downloading, installing, and getting acquainted with another browser?

Note: volunteers must be patient and experienced with non-computer savvy people!

I cannot help but it is strange that this site is having so many problems with explorer when every other site i use does not.

Maybe some time should be spent finding out why rather than telling people to use other browsers.

I understand programs like Chrome are available but explorer is by far the most used.

I use IE8 on XP.
I also use IE11 on Win7 Ultimate when I run it in a sandbox.
Wordwrap works fine for me in both versions.
I also (rarely) use FireFox 26 but I find it behaves differently to IE and not keen on it.

So I can only assume there's some weird peculiarity in her version of IE?

I had this same problem until your question forced me into researcher mode. Once IE 11 installed onto my system I discovered that annoying straight line text issue and have mostly been shortening my paragraphs. ANNOYING. But I just discovered that by revealing the command bar (right click on your IE taskbar at the top and put a checkmark in the command line), then click on Page, then adding CM to the compatibility option seems to work.
At least it LOOKS like it is working. I am about to test it out now.
That compatibility mode can also be accessed through the tools option in IE
Yep, seems to work fine.

Been thinking.....
Compatibility mode seems to work, yes??

So... a question to Chi :- Does CM use any sort of HTML5??
Because that's one thing that does screw up a lot of browsers.
Also, for those of us that still use ancient technology, IE7 (or IE8 in compatibility mode) screws up really badly if there's a sniff of HTML5 on the page.

Actually, HTML5 only screws up IE. Chrome, Firefox, etc, they have evolved to handle changes. That's why so many people have switched

yes. I tried to drop her a line through the other side but it isn't working for me, perhaps because I have my profile hidden.
I will try to make up some screen shots for her.

IE does things its own way and other browsers conform to HTML protocol. (differences in flash and silverlight will give you a migraine)

Other than coding a website to recognize what browser is being used and handling the HTML client differently for different browsers; you have to put up with IE being different from other browsers. i.e. Several sections of the Adobe website will only display properly with IE and others will NOT display properly with IE.

Mickeysoft insists on doing things their way even if the customers want compatibility.

Maybe some time should be spent finding out why rather than telling people to use other browsers.

There isn’t much mystery as to the cause – the site uses some really old code that makes bad assumptions about how modern versions of IE will behave. In this case, the immediate cause of the bug looks like use of a deprecated, non-standard selection object that IE 11 doesn’t support by default anymore. Since the problem is part of the forum software package, it might not be simple to fix depending on how things are set up.

This isn’t really true anymore. While IE probably still accounts for more than 50% of unique desktop users (NetMarketShare has it at ~58%), it hasn’t been dominant in terms of actual desktop usage (as measured by page requests) in a long time. StatCounter currently puts IE's usage share at ~25%. As an interesting specific data point, Wikipedia publishes their usage data, and IE’s usage is even lower there, at around 15% of non-mobile requests. Furthermore, the market share distribution for IE tends to be much more fragmented across versions than it is for Chrome and Firefox, which aren't as tied to OS releases and which automatically update themselves by default. Ideally a site makes efforts to support all users, but the benefit-to-cost ratio for support doesn’t necessarily favor IE, even when ignoring mobile users.

And you think the above is not reason enough?

If it were so hard to make changes to accommodate 11 why have every other site I have visited managed to do it? Changes like this are just part of business... not unusual and not hard to figure out. I'm sure CM will eventually get it straight.

because its a LOT easier for the consumers out there to switch their browser choice, considering they are free after all, than it is to expect every website to have ta conform to every odd man out. That is the main reason the big boys got together and formed some sort of standard (Chrome, Firefox, hell even apple manages to conform now...). The days of Microsoft bullying people into choosing their products are long over

I am not defending anything... just saying as a business decision cm should and will eventually make the necessary accommodations.

its not going to happen, and that is the sound business decision. Think about it, even at a 50% market share, if you ask those people why they still use IE what do you think the answer would be? Its the best of the ones available? Ease of use? Tried all the others and its the best in my opinion? No, I would wager half or more would say, its the one I have always used and haven't even bothered to try any other. So what does that mean, the numbers will continue to go down as more and more people find out just how much better the other choices are compared to IE. So why would web designers waste all that time and effort to work on IE fixes, when it's popularity is declining, compared to the rest?

Lets just say you are right... you do realize that sites NOW make accommodations for each browser? Why stop supporting any one? It would not make sense or good business practice to do so.
