The “Read To Dogs” Program at the Sacramento Children’s Home seeks gentle volunteer goldens (and their human handlers) to sit on a dog pillow, be petted, and be read to by school-age children. The program needs three dogs every Friday for one-hour supervised visits between 3P-4P.

Kids have to earn their way into the opportunity, and there is currently a long waiting list of children who want to participate.
This program provides a few moments of normalcy and a chance to bond for a child that very much needs both.

If you are interested in participating, please email (contact me if you want Lsemail address, I will give it to you) It’s an hour a week for you and your golden to make a real impact on a young person’s life. Thank you!

Golden retrievers.

Got to ask....why only Goldens? Now I live on the opposite coast so it is NOT that I want my dog to be included but, hey, if I need to be insulted on his behalf...Damn Goldens (& Border Collie for that matter)... When I had my baby in obedience school, those dogs were always showing off "look how well I follow direction" "let me get that ball for you" wag, wag...slobbering devotion. Of course, I had the only ADHD dog in the class who was constantly distracted by seeing himself in the mirror and who was always trying to corrupt the other "students" by trying to get them to play....

And MalcolmNathaniel-this is NOT an invitation to discuss my dog's IQ again!!!

I guess golden mixes would be ok. I'm not sure why golden only, or that it has to be actually. But it was announced on the homeward bound GOLDEN RETRIEVER fb page, so maybe that's why.

Don't quote me, but goldens are a popular therapy dog breed because they're usually very calm and have a warm, cuddly appearance, non-threatening. Some needing the therapy could be very excitable or easily terrified if a less-calm breed suddenly jumped up and started barking if something flew by a window, or something like that. The disposition, and even beautiful color makes it easier for someone who has trouble trusting or bonding with anything to trust and bond.

This made me laugh! My dog is totally ADD, most boring dog in the dog park because while all the other dogs are chasing the ball and bringing it back, or romping with each other, my dog just wants to find and pee on every single previously scented spot she catches wind of. Sure she'll chase the ball at breakneck speed and grab it, and as soon as she starts heading back to me, she gets another whiff of scent and the ball is forgotten, it drops, she goes deaf to my calls. OMG, must immerse my face in that glorious scent and breath it in, oh feel the rapture, must pee here. And then when she snaps out of her trance and remembers there was a ball involved, she can't find it, I have to go get it. And repeat. I gave up. She's content just to walk the perimeter and mark territory. Other dogs come up and try to start a romp, she's in for the butt sniff, and then loses interest, and the other dog goes away and finds another playmate. She even manages to hike her leg up to pee on the side of a tree if she has to. Note I'm saying "SHE". ???

She wasn't around other dogs much as a puppy?

No, she wasn't, other than her litter brothers that she left when she was 8 wks. old. And when she was a few months old, she got attacked by a much bigger dog. Luckily no damage was done before I was able to scoop her up away from harm. Since then, she really doesn't like other dogs very much. She's not aggessive with them at all, and she's okay around them, but she doesn't engage in any kind of play with any of them. And what complicates that matter is that when other dogs are persistant about wanting to play and she keeps moving away from them, they start to chase her, she gets frightened and runs faster, and finally snaps at them. She just doesn't want to be bothered. Now cats, she loves cats, lol.

Does she display the downward crouch body language when she wants to play with you? It's possible she never "learned " how to be a dog so she doesn't understand that the other dogs want to play.

Oh sure, she plays with me, she plays with the cats....she just has no use for other dogs. I think she developed the fear after being attacked and then running away from the curious dogs who then chased her and frightened her. She initiates games with me all the time, and I treat her like a dog, she's no diva, lol.

Goldens understand more words than other breeds also. Calm, not aggressive towards children, smart and tolerant.
My favorite breed.

MalcolmNathaniel -> RE: The “Read To Dogs” Program at the Sacramento Children’s Home seeks gentle volunteer goldens (1/26/2014 7:11:57 PM)

We had a golden named Tahoe. Great dog.

But he was inexplicably racist against beagles and sheep dogs. He crossed the rainbow bridge last year and in 14 years we never figured out why he was nasty to those breeds.

DesFIP -> RE: The “Read To Dogs” Program at the Sacramento Children’s Home seeks gentle volunteer goldens (1/26/2014 9:12:04 PM)

My first one thought of the horses as just another dog and would trot along beside it when my daughter was riding. But you couldn't let her near a cat.

The second one hated all other dogs and never really learned to tolerate the horses.
