The old NFL thread is getting too long and it is hard to know what has been discussed in the past so I am starting another with two comments.

The first is what do you all think of the proposed change in the point after touchdown rule? From what I understand the way it will work is all touchdowns will be 7 points instead of the 6 we have today. Then there will be an option to run or pass from the two yard line for an 8th point. But if you fail a point will be deducted from your touch down and you will only get 6 points. Myself I think it is a good idea and will make the game even more interesting. The extra point today is too boring and going for the two point conversion is not used often enough because there is little need.

Number two is a rant of mine… I think football needs to set up its pro bowl and Super Bowl in the same way professional baseball does.

I don’t give a rats ass how many hotel rooms a city has I believe the super bowl should be played at the home stadium of the NFC or AFC champion depending on the outcome of the pro bowl in the same manner the winner of the baseball all star game decides the home field advantage. This will make the pro bowl interesting, competitive with real meaning. I think home town fans deserve a chance for a super bowl.

What say you.

Butch

Sure beats the way they are doing it this year.

I heard that the place kickers are against the elimination of the point after touchdown because it will have a negative effect on their stats (points scored) which in turn could affect performance bonuses in their contracts. Also, some of the older kickers who are looking to move ahead of retired players on the "points scored in a career" list, would now be left with only one way to score points (field goals).

Where to have the Super Bowl? Easy. At the stadium of the participating team with the better record.
Decide by winner of the Pro Bowl? Well, it might raise the competition level of the game, but if some of the Pro Bowlers start playing the game more seriously, that raises the chance of injuries. Imagine a player's reaction (and his team's) to suffering a career-ending injury while playing in the Pro Bowl.

I do understand there may be injuries...but... imagine the monetary gain to the owner of the team hosting the Super Bowl. I believe the owners would be ok with the risk. Anyway the game should be for the fans as well as the owners.

I think it should be left alone. Football is great for a reason!!

But why not make it better... Would you not like the same chance of attending a super bowl as you have for attending a world series? I would. Rules are always changing in the NFL... just look at the new rules on hits. Why not have a rules change then benefits the fans... not everyone lives in a warm NFL city or a powerful one like New York.

I agree with this. I can see rule changes for reasons of safety, but to just make changes so that the scoring changes...uh...no. Leave it as is. After all, not all football is NFL, and I think the point after is still an important part of college and high school football. And scoring differently for different levels just seems dumb to me.

As far as where to play the Super Bowl...that, too, should be left alone. The Super Bowl game is played to determine which of two teams is better. By giving one team or the other a home field advantage the abilities of the two teams is not being contested equally.

Not all football is the same now so I am not sure what you mean... The college rules greatly differ from the NFL. As far as an advantage for a home team I would direct you to the play offs leading up to the super bowl over the years to see the fallacy of that thought.

The location of the super bowl should be for the fans not the television networks...in my opinion anyway.

What I intended to convey was the utter absurdity of this years pro bowl why not just have the captains pick their teams just before the game, it would mean as much.
I am inclined to think that the super bowl should be played in a warm weather venue. It would make for better games.

It makes perfect sense that the Superbowl is played in a pre-selected city. It isn't just a game, it is a clebration, and a spectacle, and doing that right requires advance planning and preparation.

As for the kickers and their stats, that deserves zero weight in any consideration of a rule change.

MLB has more logistics...handles more people...and has no problem with spectacle or preparation... What reason is there for the need of a warm weather city?

It is not fair that only certain cities economically benefit from hosting a Super Bowl... So should cities like St Louis...after all we paid the NFL to have a team here and paid taxes to have a stadium built. Our City needs the money no less then a warm venue...and most likely more.

I am completely in favor of the home team actually playing at home in the Super Bowl. (the fact that it would be funny watching the folks who paid big bucks for tickets freeze their asses off the  next time Green Bay hosts a Super Bowl is just gravy)

Changing the extra point is dumb.
