Getting pissed at my neighbors - 1/25/2014 11:53:56 AM

Status: offline 		They have two thin-haired, probably pit bull mix dogs that live in the house, but they put them outside on a lead to do their bizz, which is fine.....but it's minus double-digit temps today with wind chill, and has been all week, and they leave them out there for maybe only five to ten minutes. But the poor dogs, one's just a pup, bark and bark to come back inside because they're freezing their butts off, jumping up and down at the door, pressing themselves against it, picking their feet up out of the snow and ice, just begging to be let back in NOW.

I want to give the owners a little windbreaker jacket and then tie them outside in the arctic blast for 15 minutes, too. How's that feel, huh???

If they left them out for a long time, it would be cruel, but most animals tolertate cold differently than humans.

I have a cat and she doesn't like to walk on the snow, but since she would rather do her business outside iinstead of a letter box, yes, I throw her out the door (not literally throw) twice a day. She quickly does her business andcomes to the window when she is done. Sometimes a couple minutes, other times longer. Once, she squatted right on the patio to pee before I even closed the door, and came right back in.

My cat is spoiled rotten, and there have been times when overnight she has had accidents. She doesn't get in trouble for it since I was sleeping and couldn't let her out. However, if she did this while I was awake and home, she would be in trouble.

So again, what would you prefer your neighbors do?

Status: offline 		If it were me I would drop by and say something in a nice way. You never know...I had a great dog that hated the cold... She would go outside and fake a pee then come in and when you were not looking pee in a corner...lol. I had to leave her out for 15 minutes just to make sure she went. For all you know they may be looking out the window waiting for them to go as well before they let them in.

Status: offline 		I dont know, when it is really cold, even for the wolf hybrids, they go out, do their bizness and are back in in less than five minutes.

I do have some suggestions that you can do with your neighbors, but the TOS does not allow advocating criminal activities especially those that may injure humans.

Do like I do....put them out, watch them until they go, which is right away, and then bring them back into the house. And they could put a doggie coat on them, like I do mine, since they are so short-haired. My point is that when it's 20 below zero with the wind chill like it was today, icy blizzard conditions, those poor dogs need to come back in the house right away. I have no problem with them being left out for awhile when it's not so cold. But this whole month of January has been awful, temperature below zero-wise, and those dogs are literally throwing themselves at the door wanting to come in, holding their feet up out of the snow, one at a time. You can tell when a dog's distressed as opposed to just being a pain in the ass.

And to kdsub, no, I've watched them many times, as soon as they come out, they go, and when the weather's nicer, they stay out longer. I'm only talking about the extreme cold and them obviously wanting back in because they're so cold. They don't do it any other time.

I know the barking can be annoying but trust me, most people don't jump to service their pets when they call but take care of them in a timely manner following their own schedule.

When I put our dogs outside, they are going to be there for ten to fifteen minutes as I don't stand there waiting to be porter for an animal but go about my business. When the dog barks to be let back in; I finish what I'm doing at the moment THEN let the dog in.

Status: offline 		If you feel the need to say something, here is something. My neighbours dog has frostbite in all four feet and the tips of his ears. Tell them about that dog, they don't need to know its the French Alps! It may just make them think. Short haired dogs get frostbite in their paws very quickly. My dog never goes out in winter without fully waxed paws. I've seen too many crippled dogs round here to take a chance.

Darlin', it's a problem when the wind chill is minus 20 and and even colder and the dog barely has any hair, it is shivering uncontrollably and picking its paws up to get them out of the ice! It would be different if the temp was 30 ABOVE zero and the dog had a thick fur coat. Since you think it's such a picnic for the dog, I challenge YOU to go outside in your t-shirt and boxers and stand in those weather conditions for 10 minutes till someone gets darn good and ready to let you back in the house. Trust me, darlin', it will be a problem.

It's not the barking that I have a problem with. Those dogs bark all the time, it's what dogs do. Have you ever heard the difference between the bark of a bored dog idly barking at whatever bird or squirrel or kid on bike happens to go by, and a dog that's standing unprotected in bitter cold blizzard conditions, being pelted with icy sleet being blown on them by 30-40 mph gusts, desperately wanting to come in out of it? Trust me, there's a difference.

Let me spell it out one more time in simple terms: Dogs have very little hair, puppy has almost no body fat for protection. Temperature with wind chill is in excess of 20 below. Wind is gusting and blowing sleet. Dog is visibly distressed and possibly developing frostbite. Anyone who has no compassion for that shouldn't own pets. Period.

Status: offline 		My mom has a fenced yard and sticks her dog out there to go to the bathroom. He hates the cold and will shiver by the door but she will not let him in until he does his business. I am not sure what else to do, we are the owners of her house and as the landlord we would not be happy with her letting her dog go in the house.

I once had a dalmation that would beg and plead and jump up on the door and on everything else and hop on its feet...summer, winter, whenever but yet refused to go outside. After 10 minutes I would let her in and wouldn't you know it....right inside the door and she'd go to the bathroom.

So yeah, even at 20 below she stayed outside for longer than 10 minutes because I got tired of cleaning up messes inside the house. She either learned to go outside or she stayed outside until she went.

Unfortunately she was such a stupid dog (I really think she had mental issues) that I just could not keep her anymore. I got rid of her after she literally tore a wooden bedroom door to pieces when we weren't home.

Status: offline 		Young dogs are easily distracted, like the cold distracting them from doing what they should be doing. For the pup, this would be his first winter. But 5 or 10 minutes are not bad for letting the pet out.

If they didn't do their business and was pooping in my house, they would stay out longer next time. And I am an avid animal lover. They will learn. Some animals learn quicker than others.

Status: offline 		Yeah, except that I said in two places that the dogs came out and did their thing RIGHT AWAY, and then and only then wanted to be let back in. Once again....I'm talking AFTER they went, which is what I clearly said I had watched them do.

AND, I said I watched my own dog UNTIL SHE WENT, and THEN brought her back into the house. So....nice conclusion, but nowhere did I infer that I expected the dogs to piss and shit in the house, thank you.

Though you don't mind barking, in every neighborhood I've lived in neighbors can complain to Animal Regs about lengthy barking and the dog owners get a good talking to. Your name is not given as the complainer. If it continues, you can get 3 signatures from neighbors in the area also disturbed by it and the dog owner is fined.

Status: offline 		Chymes, call your local animal control office. If you can't locate their number, contact the non emergency # local P.D. they should have a # for you to call.

I live next door to a very young irresponsible couple in most regards. But I can't fault them with the 2 dogs they have. Each is taken out leashed, by turn, various times a day. Once their business is done whoever is out with them takes one back in and comes out with the other. Both dogs are pit bulls, one just over a year old the 2nd a 5 mos old puppy.
