jlf1961 -> Major problems with TV shows... (1/26/2014 5:12:01 PM)

Family guy has been on fifteen years, Stewie is still one year old, and Meg and Chris are still in high school. Stewie should be a teenager and the other two should be out the house.

American Dad been since 2005, steve still in high school, Hayley still in community college....

Get real people, characters age.

Flintstones and the Jetsons never aged either. Although they did "movies" if you will where Pebbles & BamBam were teenagers. Scooby gang never grew up either. I could go on, but I'll just leave it alone. [;)]

There is a 1601 year old, sexually ambiguous, alcoholic alien living in the attic...
And their goldfish has had its mind swapped with a German Olympic skier.

But the fact the children don't seem to be progressing through the education system... That sticks in your craw for realism.

Yup.

It is not normal to have an alien living in your attic? It is not normal to have a talking goldfish who seems to be perfectly adapted to living out of water?

Next you will be telling me that house cats originated on this planet and not in the star cluster known as the seven sisters, Obama is not an alien/human hybrid and Harvey the six foot tall pooka (looks like a rabbit) and I do not go bar hopping together.

ShaharThorne -> RE: Major problems with TV shows... (1/27/2014 3:00:53 AM)

You never invite me to go barhopping with you...

The last time we went bar hopping together in a past life you got me drunk and I ended up volunteering for a voyage of discovery to the antarctic.

At least it was not the French Foreign Legion!

FR

Two thoughts re Gilligan's Island:

-- The professor could build anything shy of a nuclear reactor. So how come he couldn't patch the hole in the Minnow?

-- Why did Ginger and Mrs. Howell bring their entire wardrobes for "a three-hour tour"?

LittleGirlHeart -> RE: Major problems with TV shows... (1/27/2014 7:12:13 AM)

Considering I have not seen you in real life (on cam does not prove a person real) how do I know you are real, therefore you telling me to get real could be coming from a bunch of software.

So until you show up at my door, and the dogs acknowledge you are real and not a hallucination, I cannot take you telling me to get real seriously.

I know shahar is real, I met her in a past life.

I wonder when people will realize the whole idea of this thread is to be totally bizarre?

Did you meet any 1601 year old, sexually ambiguous, alcoholic aliens at the Grand Bizarre?
;-)

Not sure, actually, but Harvey assures me that he has.

also the simpsons don't get older, just homer got 4 years in 18 seasons, the fact it's they are characters and not person, archetypes if you like, than those shows are not supposed to have a vertical story line so the time is futile.

if you don't get the clever part doesn't mean there is none.

But time is not vertical, it is linear, forwards and backwards (I saw this explained on the pilot episode of Deep Space Nine.)

If things happened vertically in time, we would be taller.

DesFIP -> RE: Major problems with TV shows... (1/27/2014 2:31:50 PM)

That would work for me. If I got taller, I'd be several sizes smaller.

I meant the main plot that connects all the episodes like the hero chasing his nemesis, maybe I traslated too literally from italian, or you understood what I ment and want to keep it bizarre, but the op was a legitimate question that could lead to an edifying discussion about creative writing.

Since when is writing for American Television shows "creative" writing?

Mainstream American television is geared to the lowest common denominator, stupidity, even Disney (actually Disney is much worse) which is why any American with an IQ greater than that of the average rock spends our time critiquing American TV shows with six foot tall Pookas.
