i have an idea for a new biz i am going to go door 2door and take peoples junk offa them an then sell it. I'll call it my rags to riches story how i conquered the world picking up trash, AND saved some of the environment and i;ll get fit doing it too.

i scavenged bits o guaranteed money by finding copper wire people threw away. and i found broken vaccumes an stuff i can scavenge for parts and sell the parts and the scrap metal A1 metals buys scrap mettle and copper of people.

The granite i found, if i can't sell it i am going to make beautiful pavers in our yard to walk from the corner of the garage to the chicken coup. it's bare hard packed dirt. nothing grows there cuz its a high traffic area. everything i found today can either be used in my home, the yard the surrounding area, recycled, sold or donated.

no but seriously stuff you can scavenge on your own man power and sell for profit is a great way of making money. and a lot of people throw away a lot of great stuff, or recyclables all because they can't be arsed to deal with it. Why can't their lainess be your financial gain.

Now, DAddy drove me so there is some money loss, but the profit to money loss margin is very small cuz we stayed local 5 mins away. but i went all over the block found the Sunday clean up dump piles asked permission to go through them, promised to be respectful and not be loud or make a mess, sold my story of why i wanted . needed this stuff, to the people let them know a few things about their neighborhood they didn't know and made agreements with them to take their stuf away. they said oh sure i have tons o stuff i was gonna pitch cuz i don't wanna deal with it. yes you can have it.

I plan on walking all over the neighborhood every day knocking on doors and introducing myself and I will even dress nice like i am on a jobinterview have a few little examples to show them of what i am doing and pitch my story.

i made 5 dollars gaurenteed collecting the aluminum they threw away in the form of soda cans, plastic bottles and glass. 100 percent free profit. and guaranteed.

daddy has 5 bags of recycling to take in from his mom an our house an i have 4 monitors i wanna sell an 1 on the trash heap if i can sell them as is for say 10 bucks that's a lot. an the ones i know for a fact work 15 i am daddies lil entrepreneur
n i have a ton of shit to get rid of clothing n stuff im selling n i met a paster who will give me his junk mailers an i told him in turn i will donate clothing: cuz the junk mailers have coupons for food n people wast them. i have a 2 for 20 coupon when that meal wolud be 50 so when i go an rescue all the coupons i now have 8 coupons for buy one get one meals and 20 coupons for 99 cent corn dogs at wiener snitchel ppl at the post office get their mail see a bunch of adds an are like well shit its all trash an dump it. not knowing or caring there's freebies in there

i wanna buy the homeless hotdogs an stuff with all the coupons i scavenged i can't use.

jody also has like 100 plus pumpkins she wants to get rid of, an i said i'd take them for our garden

those can't use i will freecycle. or throw out into a huge abandoned field to rot and nourish the ground.

now i may not make the money i am dreaming of making, but i don't mind it's win win for me. either way i have exercises, made new friends, helped the environment made our neighborhood and surrounding areas much prettier, and boosted myself esteem because i was feeling pretty pathetic and useless about not being able to work because i don't have the skills, or the mental ability to handle the stress of a job, or since i do not drive i don't qualify to get to most jobs. This is all on foot , or with Daddy's help and it's not dependent on getting to work on time or not being able to afford the bus or any of the hassle of a traditional job. much funner too. I am beyond words being able to say how proud i am of my ingenity think outside boxness and creativity, in seeing beauty aid and profit where others only see junk an toss away. that's very precious in this everything is disposable who cares attitude today.

Before you do that, you need to check with the city regarding door to door soliciting. Some cities require that you have a business license and a solicitors permit or you can be arrested and/or fined.

What Oside said, and if you are collecting scrap metal you might also need a Waste Carrier's License (or whatever the local equivalent is) which will dictate what you can and can't transport.
How often is Daddy available to drive you round? These things tend to be most successful if it is known in the community you can come at short notice and get rid of things like old appliances that they need moving quickly. Do you have a truck?

Good luck, I do hope sincerely you can make it work.

But I have to say - you sound pretty manic in today's threads. Grand ideas for rags-to-riches schemes, creative impulses, so many ideas that they're keeping you awake at night... I've been there baby, and it's textbook hypomania. Please check in with your doctor if you haven't already.

It's good to be doing something like this and get that feeling of setting things in motion.

Don't know if other places do it, but twice a year we have "dumpster day" where the neighborhood brings in a few dumpsters. There are always people who don't live in the neighborhood who wait and watch... They jump in as soon as people throw stuff in there. One year, got a little territorial between 2 divers.

I really hope that this works out for you, but this will take a lot of time and work. Why don't you just take some classes and get a job that pays an income. There is no future in what you are going to do.

I am not trying to be negative but I think the thing to be concerned about is what if after you get the stuff you can't sell it.
Then you get an accumulation of more stuff that you don't need and you have space issues as I recall.

You don't need to turn the yard into a junk yard and you don't need extra clutter.

She is bringing positive energy into her life and getting exercise. I think that this is healthy for her.

Later she can set herself other goals, such as getting an education and going for a profession as for example teacher or pedicure.

Do recall that she is a little girl, a toddler, with severe health issues, who is practically all alone in a hostile world. Her daddy appears to be of little use as a protector and caretaker for her. So she is on her own.

Again.... not trying to be negative .... BUT, monitors are NOT saleable.  Most re-cycle places CHARGE $10, not buy them for $10.

Good luck!

This is a huge thing here in Maine. So huge that all the ol' backyard junk piles are virtually non-existent nowadays and if you need to repair/make something you have to really scrounge around three or four towns for suitable metal to use. It has even led to an epidemic of thefts from houses. People go on vacation or house stands empty of tenants and the owners come back to find every copper pipe in the house has been stripped.
I know SEVERAL people who collect scrap metal locally. They have some really good connections, but at best it's only a hobby income for them. You won't make a huge pile of money, and actually I just heard that metal may have dropped in value this week (it varies like the stock market)...however, it can be kind of fun to rip things apart to sort the parts into metal types, and yes you will be doing SOME people a favor helping them clean out the garage and back yard.
There are lots of how-to videos on youtube instructing how to sort cell phone and electronics componants, how to chemically separate plastic from gold (yes, there is actual GOLD in your computer and cell phone). It's a good therapeutic hobby for someone who's OCD and likes to pick things to pieces and sort teeny items.

"antique" granite pavers, posts, and things like slate sinks can certainly be resold as architectural salvage. There is a store in Portland, Maine that showrooms pretty much everything you can pick off an old house. If you want to make money I'd go that route.

My granddad used to say, 'one mans junk is another mans treasure and that's why the UK have large car boot sales all over the country each weekend.

You need to find out what has value and what will end up costing you. Like Lance says, some things will never sell and you will be charged to get rid of it. Stay away from things like old fridges and electrical items.

Take a magnet with you so you know what are ferrous metals. Ferrous metals have significant amounts of iron in them and practically worthless.

I re-iterate what someone else said about wearing some tough gloves. I got a needle stick last week because I offered to empty my elderly neighbours recycle bin. He was on anti-coagulants and had been tossing the needles directly into the bin Although the chances were low, we still ended up spending over 6 hours in the hospital emergency.

I think it's a great way for you to get out and feel productive. Please be careful about your expenses though, gas costs money.

Also, do you drive? B/c that would be a great skill to learn for this small business.

Best of luck, let us know how you are doing.

Please let's try and support her as best we can.

I've been a "junker" for years. It started as supplemental income when I was a single Mom trying to make ends meet.

Some things to keep in mind... if you have car washes and stores with car vacuums close to you, check them. I once found a diamond ring in one, not to mention a new Play Station. I did advertise to see if anyone lost the ring, but after 60 days it was mine. That is also a good place to pick up aluminum cans for recycling. I have a bar that lets me come in on the weekends and pick up all their cans to recycle.

A long handle stick with a hook on the end is a great tool. It allows you to shift through stuff and hook anything too far out of reach. Heavy gloves are a MUST. If it isn't too far away and you can do so, check the trash pickup for the more affluent neighborhoods. Amazing what they throw away. And yes, craigslist is a great place for selling the stuff that isn't going to be recycled.
