Indeed and alas, religion has been used to buttress patriarchy. Whether that's been its sole purpose over the centuries is another question. In U.S. history, the antislavery and civil rights movements--both heavily peopled by believers and drawing on religious language--come to mind. In a larger perspective, I think of Desmond Tutu's role in South Africa's Truth and Reconciliation Commission as well as Burmese monks protesting their despotic government. In my own corner of the landscape, clergy played a key and visible role in the fight for marriage equality, the legislation for which was signed in a church.
