I was an English major, and for a time made my living in New York City as a freelance editor. I was the lead copy editor for an advertising and public relations firm, worked with authors writing for professional journals, turned reader-submitted stories into publishable material for a magazine, and was in general what we used to call a "rewrite artist." As with any other art, inspiration is one thing and being able to express it in a way that people will want to read, look at, or listen to is another. In writing, your medium is language. The better your language skills, the better your writing will be.
I'm not so much talking just about grammar, syntax, and punctuation. To see what I mean, try describing a landscape, a location, an action, in as many different ways as you can. Start noticing how even a slight change in word order can change everything, how the adjectives you choose, and how many or few, can make it more rich or starkly powerful. Get a feel for the language, play with it. Writing is like any other art. You can't make beautiful music if you haven't mastered your instrument, if you haven't learned to love it, to appreciate what it can do, and what you can do with it.
