I am proud of the gentleman that showed up! It's amazing to look back and not see what I or my department did to help him, but what HE did to help himself! He showed up that day not knowing that he would be given an opportunity to turn his life around. He told me he showed up because he has always enjoyed helping others but unfortunately wasn't in a place in life where he felt he couldn't and showing up was his way of thanking me for helping him with what little I could. Life kicked him down and society left him in the gutter, but as a person he didn't change who he was or his positive outlook on life.

And NO I dont care about about using proper MLA format this is not na formal paper where I will be receiving a grade. It's a bdsm forum. Have you nothing better to do then critique my words you grammar nazi?

If I did, I'd point out that Nazi is capitalized, "an" is spelled "an" not "na" and that you're missing roughly 11 comma's.

But I do...so I didn't.

(And that was an ellipses, by the way).

You completely just contradicted yourself, but ok. Life is to short to focus on the miniscule details, your missing the bigger picture my friend.

Nazi is capitalized

Not everyone agrees on that. I'd cap it when referring to a National Socialist, but not for a generic "nazi" who's merely a stickler or scold.

Here's Merriam-Webster's take on it (italics original):

Full Definition of NAZI

1: a member of a German fascist party controlling Germany from 1933 to 1945 under Adolf Hitler

2 often not capitalized

a : one who espouses the beliefs and policies of the German Nazis : fascist

b : one who is likened to a German Nazi : a harshly domineering, dictatorial, or intolerant person

this approach alleviates their need to stand up for themselves and demand better treatment or change their lives.

I cannot stand up for myself and I guess that many of the homeless cannot either. Many others will be alcoholics or drug users, and still others are chronically ill, whether of the body or of the brain.

they just want to be lazy

I am not lazy. In fact I work very hard, solving scientific problems that no-one else can solve. Just do not ask me to do things, to take my hands out of my pockets: that is not a part of my psychology.

Infrequently I will help someone. Yesterday I helped a stranger lift a heavy table into his attached car. It took a couple of minutes. But it is not something that I would like to do all day or even for one hour.

I will be there when the dike needs strengthening.

A homeless person may be lazy. May not. It's not for me to judge their true intentions. I'd rather help a "lazy" person than pass by a person truly in need. Sometimes, too much time and energy is wasted on figuring out ones intentions.
To me, if someone asks for help it's because they need it. Whether they're sick, disabled, lost their way or hope. I'll be there if I think it's possible.

I feel blessed to have what I have, and that includes the desire and ability to continue on. To fight. I know what it's like to feel helpless against life's hurdles, and my hurdles have been passable. There have been times I've wanted to give up but I have more fight left in me. But that's me and I choose not to compare my strengths to someone else's.

I am also within a hairsbreadth of homelessness and I am neither lazy, nor wealthy. I am a veteran of the USAF, I am also an ex-con, and I can't find a fucking job and I'm stuck living with a parent who demonstrates utter contempt for me at every turn, including threatening to have me arrested on a regular basis.

Hi Bill,

I too am a USAF veteran. I was unemployed for 9 months in 2012. My local career center had a veterans counselor, who told me about a whole bunch of programs for vets - maybe yours does too?

Regarding being an ex con - I don't know how often back ground checks are required in your line of work, but I've had dozens of employers and only two of them did checks - the USAF and YMCA. Also, some companies don't really care because hiring ex cons gives them a tax break.

In my opinion in terms of commerce and productivity....The United States is not what it once was....A lot of people who might have become homeless for various reasons would not be in the situation they are in if over the last so many decades the major industries (Automobiles, steel etc.) were not moved to other countries....Even though Apple and various other giants of Technology are here in the U.S....the technology is manufactured overseas and thus no jobs here for those who are not highly educated..Our government has failed us in this regard.

I think people seem nostalgic a lot about the past and when you are always looking back you are not looking forward and this is a byproduct of our situation now....

Where I live has one of the highest populations of homeless for the size of the community but when I read local news a lot of times it is homeless people attacking people and committing crimes because of their addictions or mental problems...what is the solution? I don't know....

This is the problem with being a grammar nazi.

At any rate, the topic is not how well we all remember 5th grade English.

Reagan's policies in the 60's and 70's resulted in the early release of thousands of unstable patients into the general public, and the mental health system has never recovered. In most areas, mental health care is fucking abysmal, and it's very hard for people to get the help they need. The fiancé and I do a fair amount of volunteer work, and I am a healthcare worker. I find that a large percentage of chronically transient people have a serious underlying mental issue, paranoia and schizophrenia is particularly prevalent. One gentleman would refuse any government care, because he feared they would implant devices in him.

It's a much more serious issue than just 'laziness', I'd bet that the majority don't choose to live under underpasses in subzero weather because they are too lazy to apply for housing. In one metro public hospital, I cared for four fresh amputees in under a month... Reason for amputation? Frostbite from weather exposure, all homeless individual, all with mental health issues.

The first step needs to be a complete and total overhaul of the federal and state services for mental health. It's ridiculous.

yes we should help or fellow man, but when do we say "enough is enough?"

when the others are fatally wounded or in a traumatic condition. Those looking for a warm bed and full stomach can stand to wait until someone has some time for them. Until then they are not a priority. Doesn't the ER have a list or something of those who are priorities? When I worked for a doctor there was one so I'd be kinda surprised if an ER didn't have one.

I am a paramedic. When I am dispatched to a 911 call I dont have the medical authority to determine that the patient is not having a true emergency and deny them medical attention. I have an obligation to that patient to ensure I provide the best possible medical care I can while they are under my care until I transfer the patient to another medical professional who can provide a higher level of care. This means other people in my response area may need to wait longer because another paramedic will need to be dispatched from a different station much further away delaying response times and ultimately delaying treatment to that patient.
