Eviction Scam - 1/30/2014 2:28:58 PM

I received this in my off-site email:

Eviction notice,

Hereby you are notified that you have to move to another
location from the currently occupied premises within
the next three weeks.

Please find the lawsuit details attached to this letter.

If you do not move within this period of time,
we will have no other alternative than to have you
physically removed from the property per order of the Judge.

If we can be of any assistance to you during your relocation,
please feel free to contact us any time.

Court representative,
Grace Tailor

There was an attachment which was blocked by my email service, so I don't know (or want to know) what it contained. I own my house free and clear, so obviously this is not a legitimate correspondence.

What please, would be the purpose of this of this scam? It contains no 'evictee' names/addresses or official company designation, just some made-up generic 'court representative' name (no court designation, either). Who would be misguided enough to fall for this?

Presumably if you contacted the 'court representative' you would be told that if you paid a certain sum, the eviction would be declared null and void.

It's pure, unadulterated bullshit. In order for an eviction to be legal, your landlord would have to file in landlord/tenant court and you would have received a hearing date before this. If the judge decided in the landlord's favor, you would have received written notice within 10 days after the decision. Finally, assuming you were still there, somewhere between 3 to 6 months, the sheriff's department would pin a notice on the door and authorize the landlord to change the licks. Even then, you'd still have 30 days to collect your property. There is no email communication at all in the entire process. Can you tell I've worked in apartment maintenance and been involved in a few of these?

We get these at the family business ALL. THE. TIME.
And "court dates" in towns like Chicago or LA.

Either the attachment (which your computer blocked) contains a virus, or if you contact the representative (because you can't open the attachment, I think this is more what they are going for)- they will suck you in to pay a large sum of money. I know lots of people who fall for this bullshit.
