I just watched Ender's Game, and it reminded me that a few people on here we're looking forward to it coming out a while ago. http://www.collarchat.com/m_4516332/mpage_1/key_Enders%2Cgame/tm.htm I actually forgot about this movie until something randomly jogged my memory. First off, I find people who say things like "the book was so much better" to sound a bit snobbish... But after seeing the movie I'm finding that describes my sentiments pretty well... After the book the movie just feels like your being pushed through the story so fast... And there are so many things shaved off the story to fit it in to a movie that the sense of loss through the movie really dampened the experience for me. Having said that, It was a good effort in my opinion, there would have been a lot of challenges with portraying this story on screen and so I really think it was a pretty good effort. Anyone else catch this movie? I'd be interested to hear your thoughts. (One thing I found funny, as someone who has spent time around Maori people... Was Ben Kingsley's attempt at a Maori accent falling a bit short and coming closer to South African...)

I don't know about others but I have found that as I absorb media...through print or movies...a certain impression is made in my mind. If I read the book first ,and like it, the movie versions seldom match the impression I had while reading. The characters personalities are always slightly off...so is the pace... and so on. This means I am usually disappointed to some degree. But... say I see the movie first and like it...then as I read the book I impart on the characters the impression I had from the movie and I enjoy the book all the more. So in the case of Ender's Game I had read the book long ago and had a certain mindful impression of the characters which did not match the movie closely. I was as usual in this case slightly disappointed but still I thought the movie was worth seeing. Butch

my daughter went to see it when it first came out. she was prepared for the movie to not be as good as the book. she apparently only restrained herself from walking out because they were with another couple. but she ranted all the way back home and then started again when she saw me. her reaction has prevented me from paying money to go see it. i think i'll just re-read the books :)

I read the book several years ago and the ending really hit me hard. So I was prepared to be less-than-impressed by the movie version. When I saw the actual release date last year I re-read the book. I saw the movie when it opened and was not overly disappointed. It's very difficult to capture the emotions of the ending in a visual medium but I thought they did a good job with the effects and such. The actor who played Ender was believable as were the child-actors around him. Yes, they rushed through a lot of the story and this could very well make an excellent mini-series. On a scale of 1 - 5, I give it a 3.5. Oh, and let's not forget the author is a far right wing fundie nutjob. He can write a good story, I just wish he would keep his homophobic mouth shut.

They left some key hings out that would have explained things better. 10 or 15 extra minutes would have made a big difference. They might make speaker for the dead but they better not try to make any of the others. Way too complex to attempt and try to pare it down to 90 minutes.

I loved the book, am prepared to be disappointed in the movie (in fact, perhaps he should gag me while we watch it so I'm not tempted to yell "Flaw!"), and have added it to our Netflix queue (it becomes available 2/11/14.)

I actually wouldn't mind your opinion of Ben Kingsley's NZ accent. [:D] Every time he talked I was like... "No Ben... No." [&o]

The movie was OK, but it didn't fully capture the book. It was a good attempt but there were issues. Like when they had just gotten done explaining how "up" is relative but everyone lined up with their heads in the same direction.

I haven't seen this one yet, but will before too awfully long though. It's been a long time since I read the book. I agree with what was said about the book influencing one's take on the movie. I was completely unable to enjoy two big action sequences in the most recent Hobbit movie, as well as the storyline on two big characters, because Jackson created them for the screen. I'll have to see it again on video, when I know they are coming, to really enjoy his vision of the story. The first time around, I was sitting there with the Tolkien purist part of my brain screaming, "that wasn't in the book!"

Another thing I found funny was the appearance during one of the final scenes of the Razer Nostromo. I actually own one and use it a lot for games, so seeing the kids mashing away at this in the movie was kinda weird.
