Thanks for the welcome! Does anyone know anything about the BDSM scene here? I know there's a club in d.c. but other than that I don't know much else. Is going there a good place to start or would a more private place be better

The Crucible is a good place. Check out "Black Rose" which is the gateway group in DC. They have intro to BDSM the 1st Thur of every month at a hotel conference room where they teach basics. Then they have "dungeon 101" the next night (1st Fri of month) which is held at The Crucible. You have to be a Crucible member to go there but the "dungeon 101" and a couple other intro activities are open to the public. Membership is nominal-about $30-$40 per year.

Yes ^^^^this. I still have my Black Rose membership. Just in case! The Crucible's "dungeon 101" was a GREAT start for me. Highly recommend.
