I'm actually thinking of saving the empty ones and making myself a custom med box holder, by glueing down the pill bottles to a good sturdy piece of wood or something, cut to fit the shape of the box i got to be organized, then when pills i already have the bottle for get re newed all i have to do is slip the piece of wood out put the pills in the old bottle and slip it back in. That way everything stays up right stays easily accessible and stays NEAT!

Are you familiar with Pinterest?

A ton of ideas: light fixtures, "hide-a-keys", portable first aid/survival kits, screw/nail organizers, ear buds holder, and there's even a bumble bee nite light.

I use mine to store mixed acrylic or watercolor paints.  It keeps them moist and malleable.

Just glue them together into an array without the lids and don't bother with the board.
Now, you have a good plant sprouting rack for your spring garden.

For the workshop: If they have the screw lids, nail the lids to the underside of a shelf then you can put the bottom up on the lid. Can you say "small parts storage". This works well with baby food jars too.

Use for storing sewing notions.

Spice containers for camping.

Load with gun cotton and wax for emergency fire starters.

Use to hold up ping pong balls for air-soft target practice.

Throw them away.

No. The whole point of asking about upcycling, which is re using something for a new purpose, is so they're not going in a landfill. I know of a few very good uses for them, but it doesn't hurt to pick the brains of other crafty people.

YOU may not believe you can do anything with them, other then throw them out but I and many others out there, do know there's re use and up cycling purposes for them. So i thank you kindly to keep your negativity to yourself. I will be ignoreing you from now on like mod Chi asked me to, if you're not contributing anything to a positive thread but negativity.

emergency sewing kit...
I keep my beads/charms in pillbottles, glitter, /googly eyes etc, I use one as a catch all for when Im making earrings, using them for the leftover beads, clasps, wire, crimp rings, anything that isnt used, then they all go into the sorting drawer to rehome them.
I use them for piddly titchy things when Im travelling or for carrying a stringing project when Im at the docs waiting room...
Ialso use them for mini bottles of coconut oil for moisturiser when travelling

CynthiaWVirginia -> RE: you all are so good at up cycling, what can i do with empty pill bottles? (2/6/2014 10:37:35 AM)

I've bought a few inches of fancy sequins at Joann Fabrics or Walmart, in a dozen different colors. While watching tv I removed them one by one from the strings and stuff and save them in an old vitamin or pill container. Each bottle holds a different color. I use the sequins for sewing onto Barbie clothes in whatever pattern I want.

I've stored pins and needles, garden seeds, and stuff like alcohol on cotton balls so I can get the oil off of my face on a long car trip. When I go to bo's I don't like taking my huge multi vitamin bottle, huge calcium pills bottle, and huge flaxseed oil pill bottle. It's easier to stuff what I need in smaller empty bottles. I reuse more small vitamin and ibuprophen bottles than prescription bottles.

If only I had someone living nearby with lots of these leftover bottles. ;) I do gardening and never thought to use them to start off seedlings.

Chris honey, right now you need to seriously clean your living space and discard things. Wanting to save stuff and make it useful is admirable. However, right now, you know you are still a bit manic, and you are going in a dozen directions at once. What's going to happen is that you are going to save stuff, all with good intention or start multple project and then not finish.

You are going to get plenty of pill bottles, a bunch every month, so this project can wait. Also you don't want to keep putting the new script in the old bottle. If you do, and then need to check the script date or the refills, you will be looking at an old bottle.

Also, don't forget, you get mutliple scripts each month. If you have six prescriptions, you willl get six new bottles each month. You can't upcycle all of them. I don't know if they are recyclable or not, but if they are, they won't end up in a land fill, instead recycling in itself helps the environment.

So while lynn's comment may have seemed short and snarky, throwing them away right now is better for you. Once your living space is neat, clean, and organized AND you are managing to keep it that way for a couple of months, THEN start thinking about upcycle projects. But only do ONE at a time (aside from normal trash separation), and only when you can do it without making your space a candidate for "Hoarders."

Also to add, if you're concerned about them going into a landfill in the mean time, hand them back to the pharmacy you get your meds from. They will be able to recycle them for you.

I use old pill bottles for storing seeds I've gathered when travelling. I leave the bottle open for a few days until the seed pods are thoroughly dry, then I close them tight, label them ("pansies from Pemaquid Light House" or "Dad's buttercup squash") and store them all in a decorative box until I plant them the next year.

I use em to hold hair pins.

FR~

I'd buy a proper meds dispenser from a typical dollar store.
Probably made from recycled plastic from old bottles.

And I'd dump the old pill bottles into the recycling box where they'll do more good for the environment than anything I could bodge up for myself.

@LGH...
For all these things you keep coming up with and posting on these boards... why not use Google???
Pretty much most of what people reply on here can be found via Google.
Wouldn't it be more satisfying to have done your own research and gotten your own solutions and projects rather than relying on us lot to give them to you on a platter??
I was also going to say something else but that would be a gold-letter thingy - so I won't.

Chris, I use something like this, which probably cost $3 dollars:

There are also bigger ones, and ones that organize multiple doses per day. Here's some examples from Amazon. I'm sure they have them at Walmart and CVS as well, but walmart.com was no help.

Regarding your empty pill bottles, my vote is that you recycle them. You should keep the current bottle on hand so you have information such as how many refills you have, etc., and not keep additional bottles for all the reasons LL mentioned:

You can even find them at the Dollar Store for well....a dollar.
