Since Stonewall, Gay folks have worked hard to take the 'we' out of bigotry. Make it a personal rather than a group effort. When 'everyone' is doing it, not doing it is an act of courage. Doing it, by contrast, is not a decision, it's the default. And of course the virulent types blend right in. Get to pretend they are perfectly normal moral and upright churchgoing pillars of the community. Perhaps even protectors of a community that doesn't include certain undesirable kinds or colors of people, but which does include violent bigots. Over the past 45 years, most of us have been asked at some time to reevaluate. Most of us have. This leaves the virulent types clearly visible, without the cover of numbers or tradition and subject to direct personal sanction. This difficult and very slow process hasn't been popular with some and hasn't yet happened everywhere.
