I can relate. Did the same but in a regular "in ranks" that they did on Tuesdays in the 3rd ACR. Wore My beat up combats with the intent of switching to My perfect shiny combats (back when we had to shine them, and I am glad we wear tan suede now). So yeah sitting there with My crisp, pefect creased BDU's and a pair of almost grey boots on. Needless to say I was not the one who got told they had the day off and report for PT the next day. Side note. I did ask one of My Platoon Sergeants one time why, even though almost every time, no matter how closely you inspected your uniform prior, they would find one little gig. He said plainly that it was because they wanted to show that there is no perfection and we can always improve. It wasn't to break a soldier down but to have them constantly strive towards that improvement. I still use this principle Myself. It made sense. Many a soldier has hated Me for it, but if they ever ask I tell them the same thing, then they get it.
