MisterP61 -> Coincidence?!!? (2/6/2014 5:28:27 PM)

OK. So LP and I had to drive 2 1/2 hours this morning to Fairbanks AK for me to do My change of duty station brief, and to redo Hers and I's ID cards. The briefing was about 3 blocks from My parent company HQ, so We stopped in to see My First Sergeant and Commander. So We are talking to My commander and the subject changes to Georgia because My Commander wants to go there after Alaska. I told her that I was stationed at Fort Gordon for almost 5 years, and she asks where. We tell her it was in Hephzibah (go ahead and pronounce that one [8D]) and she says I grew up there. She mentioned where (it was a left off the main road across from a sub sandwich place called Baldinos). We say We lived in the neighborhood when We were there, and My commander says yeah we were all the way at the back of the neighborhood, so We say Us too, on (not going to actually name the road) **** St, and My commander says no way I grew up in 3016, and lo and behold that is the exact house We rented while We were there. Her dad (A now retired Command Sergeant Major) still owns and is now living there. What are the odds of this happening??? LP and I are still amazed at how this all played out. I swear you just cant make this shit up. I guess I will never have to worry about being outed again. [:D]

ETA the question. Has anyone else had something like this happen to them? If so what was it?

Years ago when Yahoo had the BDSM chat rooms, I started chatting with a guy. Turns out we lived in the same town so we took it to IM. in no time, we discovered we lived straight across the street from each other as kids. Totally bizarre!

I can't recall anything specific like that, but I call it the small world theory. Kind of like six degrees of kevin bacon. We are all closer than we realize.

I was in the second largest city in So. Korea -Busan- outside the main train station and ran into a guy I took a class with a couple years before... in PERU! It is a small world, indeed!

I was in a park here on the Sunshine Coast, Queensland, walking my dogs and ran into a guy whose bar I used to drink in in Montevideo, Uruguay, may years ago

I grew up in Western PA. I have only been back a handful of times since I graduated high school over 20 years ago. Well I was working at a government office in Eastern PA for a few year and one day this sheriff walks in, walks out, walks back in, looks at me and says my first and maiden name. The only people who know me by that name are from back home, a tiny little village in the middle of nowhere, literally.

It ended up being someone I graduated high school with. I was never close to him but we hung out at the same parties and such. We ended up working together at the same government building for over 3 years before I moved.

Also when I started working there, I overheard my boss mention my teeny,tiny town in conversation with someone else around the lunch room. I looked over at her, asked her a few questions and turns out we know the same people, grew up blocks away from each other. That was really weird working for her.

And another time when I was living in VA, I ran into another high school buddy who was stationed at the same base as my husband so we ended up hanging out together quite often.

Yeah, I think that's the last of my strange coincidences. Nothing major or surprising though. I keep waiting to bump into someone here in MD, that I know from my hometown.

For such a small town I'm always amazed I run into high school friends no matter where I move lol.

They actually proved the six degrees of separation theory, National Geographic did a special on it, or Science channel, one of them anyway.

Basically, they had a dozen people from different parts of the world from Africa, Europe, Australia, Japan and Russia. They had to get a package to an MIT researcher, without actually addressing it to him.

They plan to repeat the experiment again with 100 hundred people.

Personally, the idea that I can be connected to any politician in Washington DC in six steps really upsets me. I mean I have my own screw ups to deal with, without being involved in theirs.

I was in West Africa once, hiding behind a large rock. Somebody was attempting to kill me.
Anyway, another volunteer I hadn't met before dived in beside me and we got talking and it turned out he was an acquaintance of my ex-wife and her husband back in Cambridge U.K., who I hadn't seen in quite a while and didn't want to.
I think I would have prefferred the company of the guy who was trying to kill me than hers. The other volunteer agreed with me.

i was in tasmania, in a tiny tourist shop and heard a very midwestern accent. turns out they were from the same small town i grew up in in MN.

TheHeretic -> RE: Coincidence?!!? (2/6/2014 9:53:49 PM)

I ran into a guy I had worked with several years earlier in a parking lot one night. He invited me back to his place for a beer, and he was living in the very same apartment I had moved out of six months earlier. Further conversation revealed that before he moved there, he had been living in the apartment with a shared back wall to the one I moved into, and he moved out because he worked swing shift, and I made too much noise when I got home from working graveyard.

Dvr22999874 -> RE: Coincidence?!!? (2/6/2014 10:16:05 PM)

That accent would sure stand out like the proverbial 'dogs-balls' in Tasmania. Redneck country down there *smile*.

When I was younger I went out for drinks with a co-worker. When asked for ID at the bar, we both noticed we had the exact same birthday. We discovered we had been born on the exact same day and in the SAME HOSPITAL. I went home that night, called my mom and asked her. She not only remembered this co-workers parents, but she remembered my co- workers name!!! So. I was basically working with someone that I had spent my very first night on earth lying next to.....

Years ago when I worked in Chicago I learned at an office party that one of the sales reps was from the same side of the mountain as my mother's family in WV, essentially making him a cousin.

DaddySatyr -> RE: Coincidence?!!? (2/7/2014 4:03:18 AM)

I lived in so many places growing up that this kind of thing happens, rather frequently but ...

When I was about 4 years old (1968), I was living with my mother at 14 High St. in Hackensack, NJ. I wasn't allowed to cross the street at that tender age so the only other child to play with lived around the corner.

When I was 18 (1982), I was living just across the street from Camp Kilmer in Edison, NJ. I was in a band. The other guitar player had this girl he wanted to introduce me to.

She came to our studio for a rehearsal. After rehearsal, we went to a bar and started talking. She decided that she was too drunk to drive and since no Irishman has ever been drunk (although on this occasion, I may have been somewhat "over-served") and because females were not allowed to spend the night at my house, it was decided that I would drive her home.

Obviously, she told me that she lived in Hackensack so I knew which direction to start off and we talked about some of the places I remembered from so may years before (I missed Charcoal Corners).

As we got closer to our destination, I realized that we were right around my old neighborhood. Sure, we wound up right around the corner from where I used to live. When I mentioned the name of the lady that my mom and I had rented from, the girl next to me said: "Oh, my God! You're the Michael!"

Here's what was really amazing about this whole thing......

That particular stop during our day yesterday wasn't a part of the errands that we had to accomplish. It was just one of those stop in and be social deals. I'm thinking to Myself on the way over that maybe we don't really need to swing by for chit chat in the middle of a snow storm. My hair is a mess from the trip, and blah, blah, blah. It really was one of those 'make your spouse happy' kind of deals.

If we hadn't done it, we may not have ever known. It was just one of those things where, if all three of us wouldn't have been talking, it probably would have never come up.

dcnovice -> RE: Coincidence?!!? (2/7/2014 2:36:20 PM)

FR

Four stories come to mind.

(a) When Mom gave birth to her first child, she and her hospital roommate got along swimmingly and promised to keep in touch. Well, life with newborns intervened. Two years later, Mom returned to deliver her second child. Guess who her roommate was? They still exchange Christmas cards.

(b) There's an Episcopal monastery on the Hudson where I like to recharge my spirit when I can. Last time I was there, I was sitting quietly in the lounge, doing my needlepoint. In walked my college roommate! Apparently I'd told him about the place (but not this specific visit) and then forgotten.

(c) One night at Dignity (the GLBT Catholic group I attended for a while) a guest presenter talked about some worthy charity. Her name and face were oddly familiar. I introduced myself afterwards, and it turned out we'd both spent our childhood summers at the same beach club (where our folks are still members).

(d) Checking out of a hotel in New Zealand, I asked if the press kit I was awaiting had arrived. "Oh yes," the clerk said enthusiastically, handing me a large artist's portfolio. I was pretty sure it wasn't mine, but she was insistent, so it came home with me. It contained a handful of mediocre drawings. I figured I'd throw it out, but procrastinated. Good thing. A month or so later, my office phone rang, and a strange voice said, "This will sounds very odd, but were you a guest at the Millennium Hotel in Queenstown, NZ?" I said yes. He asked, "Is there any chance they gave you my portfolio?" We got to chatting and discovered we'd both grown on on Long Island. And his dad had been the president of my mom's union.

I am not very well travelled at all. in fact, until I was 18 I hadn't even been out of my own county. so when I was going to London to meet himself for the first time, and he was telling me that you never meet anyone you know down there I thought it would probably be about right. however, not only did I meet someone I knew, but they were the people that ran a shop in my actual village.

that's about as worldly as my already small world gets lol

needlesandpins,
There used to be a saying that if you stood on the corner of Shaftesbury Avenue and Piccadilly on Piccadilly Circus, you wouldn't have to wait long before somebody passed that you know because the whole world passes there at some time or another *smile*,

TieMeInKnottss -> RE: Coincidence?!!? (2/7/2014 6:06:01 PM)

I worked in my college's international student's office. A guy came in from Spain...he mentioned he was from the NW part above Portugal from a small area on the coast. I perk up because my dad is from the Galicia region.... He not only was from the same village, his family knew my family who still lived there...many who I had never met.
