When I buy weapons in Missouri I have to provide a picture ID but if I sell or buy from a private owner I don't need one.

But to me DC voting is more important then purchasing a gun or anything else. It is certainly more important than getting a drivers license and for that I have to show a birth certificate...a utility bill...and a social security number.

Should not a voter have to meet those basic qualifications?... I think so.

Is part of the argument that acquiring photo ID costs money which some of the harder up voters* might not be able to stretch to?
Are there free forms of photo ID available in the 'States, or do you have to pay to get something that qualifies you to vote?

*(Obvs, they would vote Democrat, like all untermensch, but they should still be allowed to vote even so)

As I said... it is not requiring an ID that is bad... it is how to get one that could be the problem...I can think of lots of ways to make an ID law painless and easy. Even if there is a little inconvenience.

But people don't want to wait to see the nuts and bolts of the laws... they just want to assume the worse and bitch.

Most (not sure if all) states with Voter ID laws offer qualifying ID cards free of charge. It's usually part of the legislation, even.

At least less of a problem. There may still be costs involved in getting the necessary documentation required for the ID. A copy of a birth certificate will, generally, cost money. New Social Security cards are free, but, again, getting the necessary documentation required may not be.

Depending on one's situation, there may also be transportation costs and lost work time/income.

In Texas the obviously partisan and racist voter ID law the easiest to get ID is the state ID which is available from the DMV. The state promptly cloed the DMV offices in many poorer rural counties heavily black/Hispanic counties. This means long, 100+ mile, trips for people without cars to get ID's just to get the to vote. Maybe you see the problem with that?

They need the same id to do a lot of other things and nothing you stated stops them from getting them for the other things.

god knows that both parties have pulled some really neat tricks with elections over the years

That one back in 2000 is still a classic.

Yes a Mo judge allowed polls to stay open late, but only in Democratic precincts.

The intent of the voter ID laws becomes crystal clear with it's realized how damn few voter frauds using false names there are. From the last major election, I believe all the fraudulent voters would fit in a single room? It's a fix without a problem. The constant gerrymandering and other legislative tricks used to disqualify voters seem as 'poor', 'immigrant' or in any way at odds with the Right Wing proponents of these ID laws make it all of one piece an attack on democratic processes and institutions the Constitution is supposed to protect. Both parties have histories of totally fake and imaginary voters who managed to get 'counted'. People pretending to be someone else, a reactionary fantasy.
For those with short memories, Gov. Bush's disqualifying all voters in Florida who had the Same Name as any felony convict in the US (NO attempt to determine if the voter was actually that person.) was a low point. No voter was notified they had been disqualified from voting till they went to the polls to actually vote. The figure that sticks in my mind was ~75,000 people kicked off FL's voter list. Given the realities of US justice, the majority of the names of convicts generally are 'minority/black/immigrant' expected not to vote Republican, as opposed to traditional white 'American' names. Pretty much got his brother (Shrub) elected with that, but Not quite, thus the 'hanging chads' which ONLY happened in Democratic precincts.

It is not hard to get a bill showing place of residence...Every responsible adult under 65 should have a SS number... if they don't they don't deserve to vote... I am sorry but there should be some degree of competency to vote. You don't have it how can you make informed decisions that have consequences on us all.

I don’t care if you are poor inner city… poor Utah farmer…poor anything… I started out making 75 cents an hour living in a rented room…and I got a drivers license, SS number, registered, and voted… so can anyone else.

As long as provisions are made to make getting these IDs within the reach and capabilities of those that need them... I see no reason why these laws should prevent any one from voting.

From the SS card. 'Not to be used for identification'. From the US Supreme Court. 'Don't got to show no paper ID, so there!'.

Anything else?

The paperwork required to get a voter's registration card should be the end of it. If all of those so concerned about the 'widespread' voter fraud really cared, they would be all for making the voter card itself secure... by adding a picture for example.

And guess who is the first to start bleating 'No!!' every time that idea comes up?

naaaa I think its YOU that's missed the point!

point being people have to have PHOTO ID's for almost everything else, why not this...
shouldn't the people who oppose this be against photo IDs for EVERYTHING

don't people have a right to BUY FOOD? unless I carry large sums of CASH on me to grocery shop I need a PHOTO ID to write a check, you say use my debit card, but I had to have a PHOTO ID to get a bank account started didn't I?

so by your LOGIC photo IDs should be OUTLAWED completely

How much food do you eat?
Photo IDs are required for privileges, not rights. Things we want to have for which we will surrender freedoms. Driving a car or airplane are privileges granted after establishing the competency to not be a danger to others. Credit is the biggie today, a privilege you gain by making a contract with a bank and can exercise at those institutions and some merchants once you satisfy their requirements as to identity (Photo ID!). Voting is a guaranteed right of every free adult.
The issue seems to generate an amazing amount of heat (evidence of underlying class or racial prejudice stoked to agitation, in my opinion) that has No relation to any actual problem or fraud. There just isn't any misrepresented identity voting going on! The massive and current fraud occurs previously entering false names to voter rolls (For which false IDs will, of course, be generated) or deleting qualified voters. Photo IDs to use financial credit privately arranged with private entities are obviously counters to massive dishonesty and theft, hardly subject to Constitutional protection. SNAP/EBT food credit cards don't require photo IDs to my knowledge, just the correct pass code.
The whole campaign is a deceit based on widespread ignorance. In many neighborhoods, particularly 'disadvantaged' ones the Right fears will vote against them, phony picture IDs are easier and faster to obtain than valid ones.

Your pretense that the government running a voting booth and a private business running a grocery checkout are exactly the same thing, isn't fooling anyone.

Dom Ken, that's real easy to solve.
You send down to those areas vans with state workers to make up state i.ds for those who don't have them free of charge.
What if those people wanted to fly somewhere? They'd need a photo i.d. wouldn't they so having one is a good idea.
