FelinePersuasion -> I found a stray dog. I turned her into the shelters but.. (7/6/2006 12:01:34 PM)

If nobody claims her and she passes her temperment tests she still might not get adopted. If she don't She could be put down, and  I won't let that happen.

She is a pitbull or  she appears to be. I know not all dogs that look like pits are pits. Now I don't want to hear ANYthing about how their monsters bad breeds or nothing I don't care. I base judgment on the animal not the breed.

If nobody wants her I am going to either adopt her or foster her. in hopes of saving her while a home can be found.

There's plenty of no kill places around here however most are full up.

Does any one else have any tips and advice or help. I've never done this before.

She has a huge growth on her belly kind of looks like a misshapen penis, funy alagay I know but it's what I thought when I saw it and a lump on her butt. Providing those don't turn out to be cancerous, and providing she passes temperment and everything there is simply no reason she can't be adoptable.

Are there any rescue organazations around? Are you able to adopt the dog? Keep her yourself and put an ad in for a good home?

I can pay her fee's and get her out of the shelter, but I can't keep her. I might be able to work out something for short term, but I have my own dog and an unknown dog in my yard with mine don't sit well with me.

I was thinking rescue shelter yes. there's a lady one block from me who might take the dog as a favor to me.

If I was to foster her it'd go better cause then the shelter pays for things like vet care and stuff, and if the growths need to be removed their help with costs would be super.

Ok well the thing is she's got several strikes against her celest says.

The dog is about 6 or 7 she has a huge mamory mass, and she appears to be a pitbull. most people don't want a pitbull let alone an older one let alone one with a medical condition.

I am wondering if it'd be kinder to let them put her down then to try to make her continue exsisting in limbo.

Can you Google a Pitbull rescue service on the internet? There must be some out there, considering pitbulls are the pariahs of the canine pet world, I'd think.

Wow that sucketh FP. Wish there were more I could suggest. All of our shelters here are no kill. What a shame.

Just last week I watched a documentary called "Shelter Dogs" on HBO (using my brand new on-demand feature.)  It's funny, for years I have supported no-kill shelters and thought I had all the facts.  The documentary has someone changed my point of view on the issue.

Good luck to you.  Try to watch the documentary if you can.

I haven't seen the documentary on HBO as of yet but just tivo'ed it.  I know when I was living in VA there was a no kill shelter only to do some checking that is was just a temp shelter and the animals was cycled to another after  x amount of day that did put them down.  To say the least I was dismayed.

The depressing part of it all is that we are creating this problem for ourselves - these animals can't help it.  However, given the choice between a dog living in a shelter for the rest of its life (the majority of which, rightfully so, choose quantity of dogs over quality of living) without a hope of ever getting to a loving family and putting it down after a certain amount of time, I would say it is generally more humane to put them down.

Not a good choice, but the lesser of two evils in my opinion.

Of course, the best way would be to educate people about neutering and spaying, and generally to teach them that a dog is not a toy, but that's wishful thinking.

Yours,

benji

It doesn't matter anyway. SweatPea * yes I named her* has to many strikes against her, the SPCA is very particular who they'll let take pitbulls, even rescue orginizations. And none of the orgs can or want to help out.
