I accept that bad things will happen but cover ups and institutional protection?
here

Words fail me.

The only possible explanation I can imagine is that BJU, in an unprecedented burst of interdenominational charity, is attempting to make the Vatican look good in comparison.

This kind of crime against religion is what makes people of faith look to the heavens and ask WHY!

It comes as no surprise to learn that insititution such as Bob Jones U react to allegations of sexual abuse with denial. For all their strictures against extra-maritial sex, and/or homosexual sex (God forbid!) by students, denial and blaming the victim are the central pillars of their reaction to teacher-student or adult-child sexual abuse. The difference between the protection offered to abusers and the activities of a pedophile ring are minimal.

The Religious Right, so quick to condemn Islamic madrassas might like to advise us of how they see Bob Jones U and the like as any different to a madrassa. Both place the interests of the governing ideology/belief system over the welfare of childen entrusted to them. It is no exaggeration to assert that lives are emperilled in order to maintain an ultra-clean ideological reputation.

Cases such as this are compelling evidence why we should think twice before allowing fundamentalists of any variety near childen, or allow them . to exercise authority and leadership over vulnerable children of any age. Children need protection from predators of any ilk, and education not indoctrination.

Two comments:

1. Completely agree, DC.

2. Anyone else find it fucking hilarious that the Christian school is BJ University?

I also have to say that words fail me upon reading this.

I am a bit curious, though, as to whether they have any Scriptural support for the notion that reporting a sexual assault somehow "hurts the Body of Christ." A cover up would be a lie, which would be bearing false witness, which is a sin in most religions, including Christianity. Wouldn't lies and cover ups hurt the Body of Christ more than someone telling the truth?

What's even more interesting is that, given their positions on sex, gay marriage, fornication, etc., you'd think this would be the kind of thing they'd want to ferret out and punish severely, not turn the blind eye to. It's easy for them to point out "sins" when they're hundreds of miles away, but when the "sins" are in their own backyard, they lie and cover it up.

And then they wonder why people turn away from the church...

According to what my younger cousins tell me the promise ring girls don't do oral. They claim these bible belt girls are doing anal.

Where I graduated high school was affiliated with a fundamentalist church. They were more relaxed that BJU about some of the policies of student conduct, but we did have rules that kids in public schools didn't. I remember when we were juniors and seniors we were encouraged to apply to Christian colleges....BJU being one of them. Although I had no interest or intention of attending such a university, my best friend did go to Liberty University when Jerry Falwell was at the height of his notoriety, but even back then, when she was looking into BJU, and we were reading some of their rules and policies for students, we looked at each other and said "no fucking way". What's funny is that even the school counselor said she didn't blame any of us for not having any interest in BJU.

So in a way this news doesn't surprise me, but I really would have hoped that over the past 30 years BJU would have at least *started* to come out of the Dark Ages.

Apparently not.

The big change at BJU in the last 30 years is that they started allowing inter racial dating in 2000.

FR:
The really hilarious thing about this is that BJU is there for the sort of nutty Baptists who think that the Pope is out to reinstall King George as ruler of America. If they want to be pulling this sort of shit, maybe they should be taking notes from the Catholic church on how it's done, rather than whining about the Pope's influence...

Thank heavens Tweak they are a very small part of religion and conservative thinking in America... you are certainly right about them and we are in full unusual agreement.

Good old fuck me in the ass cause I love Jesus huh.

I was apart of a home school group that loved them, they gave me the creeps so I no longer associate with them. Then I red a home school blog called Home is Where the Hurt Is. I could see some of the families doing that to their children. I refuse to associate with christian homeschooling anymore.
