I'd treat it as if searching for a job. While the Internet has resources available for a job search, your best bet it getting one through networking. That's how I've always found a job and a partner.

I've been fortunate. I have had one long distance "friendship" on here, could have been much much more if not for the distance. It wasn't the expense of seeing each other, more the time constraints of work and flying. The man I'm currently talking to only lives two hours away, I feel like that is fairly local. I've never really limited myself by distance on here, I could pack up and move if the right person came along, and the stars aligned, fairly easily. I do see how much more complicated it would be once you're older and more established, would be terribly frustrating.

Possibly your problem is down to the very low numbers of people who are into BDSM at the level of the average poster here. Face it, we are the sexual Amish. I live now with my wife (I relocated) in a part of the world that is very, very unpopulated. Such people as are even about tend toward the elderly, the extremely uneducated, and the lord-lovin'. The nearest city (not a big city) is a few hours away. If my wife died, that would pretty much be the end of my kink life unless I moved. On the local Craig's List, I do see the odd kink listing, but not from anyone I'd ever consider contacting.
