I've been wrestling with something for a little while, now.

For a couple of months, I have been attempting to recreate the EP that my band made in 1983. I want to get it done before I am no longer able.

Initially, I told myself that it was for my children and loved ones for when I'm gone; something about which I was passionate that they can have to remember me in a positive way.

I have three of the four songs finished. They sound pretty damned good, if I do say so, myself.

I find myself toying with the idea of posting them on YouTube or otherwise publishing them. I don't know if I really want to "take the plunge".

Back in the 80s, I did "the poor man's copyright" and mailed the chord charts and lyrics to myself. Also, we had the physical records (people under 30 years of age, look them up on Wikipedia) so, proving ownership was accomplished for the time.

Those letters have been lost with time and the records that weren't sent to radio stations and record companies and talent agencies have also gone the way of all flesh.

Being that this is a new century and all the technological advances, it would seem that e-mailing the songs to myself and then, posting them to YouTube would "re-establish" ownership.

I wrote all the songs so, they're mine. No legal issues, there.

So ... I guess my question is: Should I publish the songs to YouTube or should I just keep them for my own familial posterity?

Also, does anyone know if there's a way to just let certain people have access to certain videos on my YouTube page?

Go for it.

Is there some reason you'd only want selective access on YouTube?

Kind of for the initial stated purposes; so that it is for family and friends and anyone with whom they may wish to share it. kind of a permanent thing that they can access from anywhere?

I've visited your youtube page before (like a ninjarette!)
I'm glad you're including your work with the band here.
I like it, I like it!

Thank you, ladies. I'm in the process of rebuilding the studio (separate vocal booth/drum room) so, recording is on the back burner for a little bit.

At this point, it would make me very happy to find a band that plays 2-4 times per month and just get back to what made it so great for me, 40 years ago.

I'm recording because I need to do something and this seems to be it, I guess.

Yes, you can put controls on access to youtube videos.

However, if it's a friends and family thing, lots of people have Facebook pages, not as individuals, but as an extended family page.

On the other hand, if you post on youtube and it goes viral... voila! You have both professional attention AND money.

It would seem this is one of those things in which when you begin taking steps in any direction, you will then become clear about whether you are on the right track, or not. Inner voice and all that.

Whichever you choose: all the best and enjoy!

I say go for the YouTube option, that way you share something you are passionate about with the world AND your nearest and dearest get to see it any time too.

I have some stuff up on the tube, just band jam sessions and such, you can set your privacy settings to various different options that suit you, from only viewable to friends and family to free to everyone but with disabled comments (You know just in case some hawt groupies leave some comments inappropriate for the family to read) lol.

Most of our stuff is just iphone footage so not top quality but I have played about with Reaper for post production sound, video pad for the visual stuff and prism for file conversion and stuff, all free/share-ware so worth a look if you like the techy stuff.

The studio we use does a jam sesh special, 100 quid and you get the studio/engineer for an hour, all the tracks you lay in that hour are mastered then cut to disc for you to do what you want with, a good option if you want some discs to give to peeps also.

****ETA***** Missed your post about your own studio, and now I've read it I'm just jealous lol....Kudos
