Father and son arrested in connection with slaying of man found dead behind Norwood middle school

By Nicholas Jacques / Globe Correspondent / February 14, 2014

A father and son were charged today in connection with the death of Vincent Lalli, a Vietnam veteran whose battered body was found behind a Norwood middle school in January.

Anthony Canejo Sr., 52, was charged with armed assault with intent to murder and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, the Middlesex district attorney’s office said. Anthony Canejo Jr., 30, was charged as an accessory to the crime.

Canejo Sr. was not charged with murder because an autopsy has yet to determine Lalli’s cause of death, a spokeswoman for District Attorney Marian T. Ryan said.

The two men lived with Lalli, 66, in a Somerville apartment, Ryan’s office said.

Canejo Sr., allegedly strangled Lalli and beat him with a crowbar in the Sycamore Street residence, prosecutors said. He and his son are accused of then dumping his body in Norwood.

The elder Canejo was arrested Thursday in Quincy, and the son was arrested this morning in Watertown, Ryan’s office said.

Both men pleaded not guilty at their arraignment in Somerville District Court today. Canejo Sr. was ordered held without bail pending a dangerousness hearing, which is scheduled for Feb. 21. Judge Antoinette Leoney set the younger defendant’s bail at $250,000, but he was ordered held for a probation violation, the district attorney’s office said.

A dog walker found Lalli’s body behind Dr. Philip O. Coakley Middle School on the afternoon of Jan. 29, authorities said. Lalli had been reported missing to police about a week prior, the Norfolk district attorney’s office said at the time.

Prosecutors said the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner is performing an autopsy on Lalli’s body to determine his cause of death.

State Police and the district attorney’s office are investigating the incident.

Is there some sort of connection between the victim's military service, or status as a veteran, to his murder? I'm not understanding.

It may be I am sensitive to this but there seem to have been a number of 60+
veterans murdered of late.
Since I fit in that demographic it may just be that it hits home with me.
Are a they being singled out or does it just get more coverage if it is a veteran?

That's just sad. I hope justice is served.

I think it is sensitive to you as a Gulf War veteran coming back and being murdered would be to me. We have experienced in our own way what war was like and to survive, only to come home and lose that life at the hand of a fellow American.

I think a body found dumped behind a school would get a certain amount of attention, regardless of prior service by the victim.

Yes, I am not a combat veteran, I was in intelligence during Vietnam, but I feel a bond with all veteran
of all wars.
PS thank you for your service.

You would think so.
I suspect that it is more that us older guys are targeted as victims cause we look like easier targets

Thank you also. I think the "family" feeling applies to anyone who has worn the uniform in whatever capacity they served. The point being you served.
I don't usually volunteer my status merely because I do not expect a thank you or any benefits ie. discounts, special treatment merely because it was my choice to enlist. I knew and understood fully what raising my right hand meant.

It`s a tragedy when ever someone innocent is killed.

ANYONE.

That said, we as a nation could do a lot more to help the older vets live safer, more comfortable lives.

The victim and killer lived together. Not sure how much protection the law or anyone can give other than what we already have.....

I hope they have enough evidence that the don`t have to offer the kid a deal.

I understand, only mentioned it because it was relevant.
