So it's raining again today and I was working on the computer, ignoring the cats terrorizing the dogs ("wet outside, we can't go out, it's boring, OK, we're cats, we go and slap a bunch of Dobies, because we're cats and we can....") then heard the dogs playing with each other, didn't think much of it, only they were apparently playing tug of war over a feather pillow, lounge now looks like it snowed, I'm vacuuming like crazy but the bastarding feathers are just about everywhere... Is there a simple trick because whenever you move with the hoover, you get some but more are just flying about and make you sneeze... Btw the dogs try to tell me it was the cats who did it, the cats look bored and give me the "Whatevaaaaaaa" look and on occasion paw a feather.

I'm sneezing my head off, in a way it's funny but it's also annoying, vacuum what you can catch, then have a break so the feathers settle again, then repeat procedure... Just what you need to start your week!

oh yes...been there, seen it, got the feather-covered t-shirt! What's even worse though is if the mutts have eaten the feathers. Fuzzy poop is not fun to clean up [:'(]

I have a pretty good, top of the range vacuum cleaner, learned the hard way that all the cheaper ones don't last very long with 2 cats and 2 dogs.... I think I need to remove all the furniture, books from the book shelves and then vacuum the room and each bit I put back in, oh well, an early spring cleaning seems in order....

Last time this happened to me (many many moons ago), I used a mister - one of those squirty bottles. Gently "mist" over the feathers with warm water to dampen them slightly, then hoover. I added a little nice smelly stuff to the water so that damp feathers smelled nicer (sometimes they stink!). The last dog that did that to one of my pillows got re-homed. There's just nooo way was I going to tolerate that sort of shit.

I think that's really the only way to do it. I vacuumed for hours, then found the odd feather lying around for weeks afterwards. Aren't our pets wonderful? lol

Woah, I'd rather rehome hubby than any of my fur babies, in fact he jokes that he pushed for marriage so he has joined custody of the fur babies, he knows I might leave him but never our cats and dogs... As for a mister, not sure it would work, as it's not just the odd feather, it's more like a blizzard, and the dogs have feathers sticking on their wet little noses, the cats seem to enjoy chasing feathers... quote: Aren't our pets wonderful? lol They definitely are entertaining but sometimes I could do with a bit less entertainment... A very light misting stops the buggers from floating all over the place when you're trying to hoover them up. My brother laughed his socks off watching me chase feathers for hours on end. Sometimes when I emptied the vacuum into a bin liner I created just as much of a mess as when I'd started. It was exhausting work. My mother gave me that tip. Worked a treat! All done in less than 2 hours. You don't want wet feathers - they tend to muck up the vacuum, even a Dyson. And yes, I didn't think twice about rehoming my dog that ripped 3 feather pillows and a feather duvet and caused a blizzard in my bedroom. I had no qualms about doing that and would do it again in a heart-beat. I actually got a ticking-off from the rescue centre for allowing my dog to get bored enough to do that sort of thing in the first place.

What I did the second time (!) was to put a pair of tights over the end of the suction tube to catch the feathers. Then you can pull them off and stick 'em into a trash bag without worrying about gumming up the inside of the vacuum cleaner.

To be honest, the ticking off was right, I just have the problem that I have 2 of them and they do play with each other, and have rope toys were they also play tug of war, I work with them a lot and they are rather well trained (even the dog trainer said so) and exercised, but they will play with each other, they aren't allowed on furniture unless invited and will not take stuff from the table or the sofa, my guess is that the pillow fell off the sofa (cats most likely), and one of them picked it up (they are always "nesting" and adding stuff to their beds if they can), the other thought "Oh it's a toy" and the tug of war started, pillow ripped... We're talking about 33 and 45 kilos pulling on each end and very big teeth. Dobies are super playful dogs. Why didn't you properly rehome yours, both of mine are rescues, last place I'd give an animal to would be a rescue center as a lot of them PTS them.

No worries, apart from having feathers up my nostrils, choking on them (if nose doesn't work, one tries to mouth breathe) and the massive clean-up, it was actually funny... We didn't get snow for X-mas in the UK, maybe the little darlings wanted to make up for it.... Though I think I found a trick. I opened the windows wide, ran across the road to the car body shop and borrowed one of their blower fans, closed the door to the lounge... When I went down to check the mail, that side of the house does look like snow flakes are emerging magically from the top window, it will still be a massive clean up, but getting the damned feathers out of the vacuum was a bitch and it blocked twice. My limit is buying one vacuum per year ;) Withdrew into my office with 2 sheepish looking dogs and cats, I occasionally ask them if they've been "bad" and get massive grovelling. Btw had a massive laugh when the dog trainer asked if I ever trained dogs professionally, apparently good assertive body language and passive leadership, they see me as the pack leader (hubby didn't like that one one bit), I was a bit caught out and just mumbled something about watching their body language (while hubby choked on his tea), I wasn't sure how the trainer would react to "Really not that much different than training subbies!" Sometimes one just has to be discrete ;)

There are loads of rescue centres and I wouldn't have given him to any old centre. He originally came from them so he just went back (I'd had him for a year by then). They never put an animal down and look after their animals very well. They also do a lot of very careful vetting before letting anyone take one of their animals. I know for certain that he would have gone to a very good home. I got a replacement for him and I had that one for about 8 years. Eventually he went virtually blind and was bumping into everything. Several times he crashed into the patio doors trying to chase a cat in the garden. One time he smashed through a glass coffee table chasing a ballon and hurt himself really badly. That was when we (very sadly) decided to have him put down; he would have been about 13 by then. I haven't had another one for about 8 or 9 years now. If I was ever in a position to have another dog, I'd go back to that particular rescue centre. It's one of the very few I would reccommend to anyone over here.

I prefer the small rescue centers, we recently tried to adopt an 8 year old Dobie girl from the RSPCA, they were so freaking unreasonable, the dog had been in kennels for over 6 months, was depressed and didn't react to much, we said we take her in, with 2 well adjusted dogs of the same breed, much better for her to recover (traumatized by owners dead and being locked up with him, was starved and dehydrated when found), they insisted she should be a single dog (not shown any dog or cat aggression but they just decided that is how it should be), offered fostering, offered adoption, whatever they want, got fobbed off, then out of the blue dog was gone, apparently adopted when I started complaining, turned out dog was put down. Last time the RSPCA ever saw a penny from me!

I have to agree. Though different RSPCA centres do different things. I love Jerry Green's rescue centres. I think they now have 3?? Very thorough, very clean, well organised, and more importantly (to me) they love their animals!!
