Alright, way back in the fifties and sixties, a soviet scientist transported King Crabs from the northern pacific to the arctic waters north of Murmansk. Eventually, some fertilized females made the trip and were plentiful and multiplied.

Jump to the present.

King Crabs are an invasive species in the waters off Norway, and other countries along the North Sea.

These crabs are much bigger than what is now being caught in the over fished waters off Alaska.

King crab brings top prices in the US, Japan and other countries.

Now, instead of the "what should we do" scientific studies that are not getting anywhere, why not turn the fisherman loose on these monsters (some have leg spans of six feet or more) and have unlimited catch limits in the right season to actually get crabs that are perfect for the dinner plate.

I mean with the tendency to over fish the oceans, wouldn't a few thousand crab fishing boats solve the problem in rather short order?

Possibly because American fishermen may not have the fishing rights up Murmansk way?
(Though the notion of a "King crab war" is so awesome it takes my breath away...)

Norwegians cant learn to fish for king crab?

And I have not seen a crab boat that can make the trip from Dutch Harbor Alaska to the area north of Murmansk, kinda a long haul, not to mention pack ice....

Those sound absolutely DELICIOUS! We're gonna need a bigger pot, but you bring a tub of legs, and I'll bring the pliers!

We're gonna need a bigger bowl for the melted butter too. I'll find something that will work. Maybe the crock pot...

Crabbing is easy. Bait pots, drop pots in the water, drink some beer, pull pots back out of the water, boil and eat your (divine!) food. Get too many pots on the boat, and have the crew massively sleep deprived, and you'll get a few seasons of fun reality TV, but the process itself couldn't be simpler.

Who the hell wants to go to Murmansk ???I've been there once and never again. Let the russians worry about their. backyard. But there are plenty of Norwegian, Icelanders, Germans, Brit fisherman who would jump at the chance to earn the kind of money those things would bring I'm sure.

DVR22...I'm sure you know what it takes to work on those boats. 'Snot easy, icy cold, frigid waves washin' over you, slippin  & slidin all over the deck, hangin' on with your arms crooked into the round spoked wheelie things so your ass doesn't get washed over the side. And all for someone's din-din. That shit's hard work. Never underestimate what goes into gettin' them thangs onto the dinner table.

Yeah, I know. I spent six weeks on a north sea trawler in the middle of winter when I was MUCH younger. I was never warm, never dry and never got enough sleep and I NEVER went back !!!! One day, we spent the whole day chipping ice of the deck and uperworks so we didn't roll over and as fast as you chipped, it came back again. VERY scary. Those guys are heroes in my book...............mad but heroes.

1 meter wide, with legs spread, is a damn big crab.

Well I have never been a connoisseur of crabs but did attend a keg party with bushels of crabs. Seems you'd get fewer of them but I guess there's more meat or it might not be worth it. Unless of course...that is they are particularly tasty.
