In basic we had the standard C Rats, and the occasional trucks from the mess hall with actual food.

Jump school I was introduced to MRE's.

Ranger school made me realize that food, in whatever form was a luxury that was never guaranteed and many times unwanted after some training.

Sniper school was the first time during training I enjoyed the food... that in and of itself should have been a warning.

During my years in the army, I have supplemented my rations with snake, spiders, fish, and other critters that wondered too close.

So trust me, MRE's are not the worse thing I have eaten, as I am sure is the same for any grunt, bush beater, marine, and others who do not have the luxury of a mess hall nearby.

They waited 30 goddamn years just to do this, just to make sure I was beyond any chance of being recalled to active duty.

This was a deliberate and calculated program orchestrated by the Department of Defense and the US Army, and probably ordered by President Reagan because it had to be done at the highest level of government.

But they screwed up. Yes they did. Because I will hire a dozen voodoo priestesses to lay curses on all of em!

Vengeance shall be mine!

You are officially called up Corporal.

Report to the brigade, Monday 6 hundred....we let you out 3 weeks early.

I concede your point.

However, name one, just one, Pizza place that would deliver to some poor grunt hunkered down after diggin in for the night in indian territory?

Just one, that's all I ask.

Teddy Bears, a truck stop on I-80, on the Skull Valley Highway. They had a couple of surplus Dispatcher 100s painted OD green just so they could go on post at Dugway. Probably the only pizza joint that took orders over shortwave.

And I80 went through which UN Peace Keeper checkpoint on the Israel/Lebanon border in the fall of 1982?

When I say Indian Country (phrase learned from SSgt Belemy, 4 Tours in the Southeast Asian Wargames 67-71, lunatic volunteered to go back!) I mean where the people you is supposed to be keeping from shooting each other is shooting at each other and at you too.

Well, technically, it was in Indian country, in a manner of speaking. The Skull Valley is home to one of the branches of the Ute Nation. Most of the valley was part of the reservation. And although it wasn't considered a 'hot' zone, more than once some bored shitkicker or goatroper would take a potshot at the convoys with .22s. [:)]

I was never that lucky. I made a major mistake upon getting to fort Stewart.

You see, a couple of officers accompanied by some dudes in civvies hit the company area about a week after I reported.

They called a few vets, and a couple of us noobs to the CQ hut and asked if we would like to volunteer for a "specialized" unit.

I asked why they were talking to me, and the answer was my scores in sniper school.

Now, I must point out at this time, that no body ever told me NOT to volunteer.

I said yes, one of the vets said yes, the other two noobs said yes, and the majority of vets said "Hell No."

A good portion of my file is blacked out, even though some of what we did made the news. But hey, that is the Government.

MasterCaneman -> RE: They did this on purpose. (2/20/2014 7:09:55 PM)

Geez, I learned that when those assholes at Ft.Sill asked if anyone knew about 'off-road vehicles'. My hand went up, thinking I was gonna get to play around with jeeps and shit. There's a lot of grass that needs mowing there, I discovered.

You might wanna sit down for this...okay, I'm gonna say just three words, and I want you to apply that to MRE's/C-rations as regards to pizza. Chicken Ala King.

DUDE.... man, thanks for bringing back that nightmare right after I wake up.

Getting that at zero dark 3 days in a row was NOT motivating.

Cane, I have been having nightmares since you mentioned Chicken A La King...

jlf1961 -> RE: They did this on purpose. (2/21/2014 10:43:08 AM)

On C Rats, remember the Ham and Beans in sauce.... white ham, white beans, white sauce....

On MRE's (please remember, I got first gen) Pasta and meat in sauce.

Now what I want to know, is why cant the Department of Defense use these people to develop MRE's. Longer shelf life, much better food quality....

Up until now, I have managed to block that particular memory (I was in at the tail end of C-rats/1st gen MREs). Now, I can see both in my mind's eye. I counter with...Orange Nut Loaf.

C rat pork patties, c rat eggs and ham...

I had a buddy of mine ask the philosophical question, we are willing to fight for America, and this is what they gonna feed us?

MasterCaneman -> RE: They did this on purpose. (2/21/2014 9:28:53 PM)

This may have been past your time in, but they had this abomination called B-rations, which looked like giant sardine cans you'd heat up in an immersion heater. Bacon and Cheese Eggs was a horror show upon opening.

DomKen -> RE: They did this on purpose. (2/21/2014 10:42:51 PM)

The things they try and feed ground pounders.

Sort of makes me nostalgic for shit on a shingle and green eggs.

Dvr22999874 -> RE: They did this on purpose. (2/21/2014 11:06:33 PM)

An uncle of mine was in the Brit army back in the mid 50's and on scouting around the back of the cookhouse found some empty dehydrated potatoe cans stamped with the nazi chicken and swastika, dated 1941. One of the Bait-Layers told him they had been found in some old wehrmacht bunkers that had been unsealed and the Brit army, never being a mob that wasted anything, told the cooks to use them ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,among other things that will remain nameless. Some were labelled 'A,M. which was Italian stuff and was even worse.

I remember being fed that type of pizza during the test of gamma sterilized food back in 1986. Just like eating a slice of pizza the day after you had it delivered.

I was one of the guinea pigs for the first tests of gamma sterilized food products back in the 80s. Too bad people are too paranoid for this technology to become prevalent. Ribeye steaks that have a five year shelf life at room temperature are a good thing.

Unless I am completely wrong about my particle physics, gamma radiation only affects living cells.
