Once, when I was a young kid, my parents took me to the zoo and I particularly remember marvelling at the fact that male animals had bollocks, as well as humans. My own were probably still only peanut sized at the time - which was why I was fascinated at looking at a male leopard's scrotum. This was not just big but spotted, just like the rest of him! I fell to wondering how entertaining it might be to fire a stone at his goolies with a catapult. (I've always been a crack shot with a catapult.)

Anyway, that's all beside the point, really. This being: I've heard stories that other male animals - particularly carnivores and most especially various breeds of attack dog - don't feel pain in the testicles to nearly the same degree as men do. For those who have experience of such animals - have you noticed this yourself?

I think I still had my rats when you visited, they are omnivores but for their size they do have massive balls they drag behind them and they sit on them when they beg, if they jump, I think they make contact with the floor, don't think any human guy could manage that... (did I just hear you whince?)

Can't give you much advise about our carnivores, cats and dogs are all done (you might have noticed Alfie has no balls and big cat boy has a rather high pitched voice).

My very first Dobie was intact, and the guy who had him before me used to find it funny to flick his balls, which caused the dog massive pain, this in turn caused me to to speak politely and plainly to said guy, along the lines "If you wish to continue to live and would like to be able to walk, you take 200, buy yourself some more drugs and I hope you OD, or else I make sure the cops bust you for possession and will claim you tried to sell me some. Did I make myself clear?" Can't buy a dog much more reasonable, can you?

Gawd, I was thinking, just now, as I was walking up to the offy, about an incident I came across on the way back from the railway station one night. Two Japanese women walking their dog; a local bloke was walking his. Both medium-sized dogs - they looked like bulldogs - though I freely admit I'm no expert on dog breeds.

Anyway, the bloke's dog had gone for that of the two Japanese women. It had locked its jaws onto the face of the other dog. I could see that the result was going to be very nasty. The bloke (who looked rough and out of his head, to be honest) was kicking his own dog in the side to try to get him to let go.

I'd heard that one trick was to ram your thumb into the anus of an aggressive dog. Now, this I wasn't willing to try, on account of I'm quite attached to my face as it is. Nonetheless I grasped that causing an aggressive animal surprise, rather than pain, can work better at least in some instances. So I did a quick, sharp,but not hard, kick into the attacking dog's balls. it let go. I don't want to describe the state of the other dog's face by that time. It was hideous.

I've seen YouTube videos in which the owners of pit bulls have tried to get them to break off attacks on other dogs by kicking them in the groin. One showed the dog's owner putting all his muscle into it - and it having zero effect on the attacking dog. It was quite shocking.

I hadn't noticed that, Lady C, no, I have to admit. I neglected to inspect Alfie's groinal area closely during my visit, well-formed though it was.

Pitbulls seem to be different, if they go on attack there is literally nothing that can stop them short of a bullet or a stun gun, lovely dogs but in the hands of somebody not prepared to train them properly or getting them aggressive, they are lethal.

As I said, my first Dobie showed massive pain when the effing ex-owner drug head flicked him, something the scumbag found amusing, he was a lovely dog but any guy stroking his flanks and just getting near his groin was shown canines with a big growl, he was fine with women, but guys could only touch his head and back.

I do have this theory, Lady C, that surprise is the thing. Some animals are keyed up to expect pain when they're fighting. They can deal with it. But surprise - that's something else entirely.

'Sticking your thumb up a dog's anus' was a trick that I'd learned from a postman who'd been attacked by dogs frequently. You can imagine how it would work: A dog might expect pain - even extreme pain- anywhere on its body, and its instincts would be geared to that. But an object penetrating its anus? The last thing in the world any creature on this God's earth would expect in an attack situation. Well, it would sure surprise me out of an aggressive mood, anyway.

Jesus. I mean, imagine it. It would tend to throw you off your stride, wouldn't it?

Well, I hear it throws some ladies in bus stations in some UK towns off their stride, ha ha ha... That was a priceless story....

My vet told me that unneutered male cats tend to not only fight more, they are also often trying to go for each others testicles, as a way of making sure the enemy's genes (who showed himself as weaker in the fight if they succeed) can't be spread around....
