pg4g -> Newb Whip Question (2/22/2014 3:02:31 PM)

Ok, I'm certain this is gonna make me sound like a major newb!

My partner has said he wants to get into lashing me. He wants to cut the skin and not just get me red raw. His question, which I couldn't answer, is what type of whip should he get to cut my back up, and what training should he get?

I've done some impact play, and it's always seemed really tame for me. I just have too high a pain tolerance. I'm hoping this is more exciting. But I've never done anything from the top of this kind, and thus I'm no help for answering his questions, so I thought I'd ask you.

So any answers are greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hi pg4g,

A good source from some information is this website: http://bullwhip.org/ especially the part about BDSM here: http://bullwhip.org/?page_id=33

The best starting whip is going to be about 4 ft long. He should attend seminars, workshops, and spend hours practicing with the whip until he gets very precise with it. This also has the advantages of "breaking in" a new whip so that it becomes more flexible and will get him very used to using the whip. I personally wouldn't play with someone using a whip unless they had a minimum of 6 months of practice and could demonstrate their proficiency. If you're in an area with an active BDSM group and can find someone who uses a whip then I strongly suggest he ask that person if they are willing to give him some tips/mentorship.

Be aware going into it that there is a very good chance that if you let your partner use a whip on you that you can get some deep and lasting scars, especially if you are doing it specifically to get cut. If you choose not to wear eye protection then nothing should be done near the neckline as a whip can wrap up and into the face if a mistake is made and it can take an eye. Make sure you and your partner are aware of these kind of risks going in.

You say you have done some impact play and it was tame. If you don't mind my asking, what have you played with? Whips are, to me, the extreme end of impact play and require a lot of skill and trust. It might make more sense to use other toys along the intensity track before you get to the deep end.

Hope this helps,
Ovid

pg4g, what kind of physical shape are you in?

Decent. Lean, muscled, do around 2 hours physical training every weekday, 2 military physical training sessions a week, and MMA classes.

180 pounds, 5'9"

[Edited to fix numbers and MMA]

You might want to look into a sjambok, or serious canes. They will leave welts, and eventually draw blood, but the learning curve is a lot shorter than it is with a bullwhip. Some photos here.

http://www.jacksfloggers.co.uk/Pages/Canes.htm

It'd be best if you could go to a demo together, and both learn what good and bad hitting looks and feels like. It's possible to cause bone bruises and other fun things, if done improperly.

Happy exploring!

LadyConstanze -> RE: Newb Whip Question (2/22/2014 3:44:41 PM)

It will take him a while to break in the whip and get good enough so that he won't hit areas he shouldn't hit (or himself), if he breaks skin, yes scars are likely to happen, so NOT a great idea!

Hey, thanks for the link, and I reckon you're right. I'm gonna recommend something like that to him. As for demos, yes, we expected we'd go along to a demo and see it done properly. [:)]

I'm sure he's gonna like the idea of trying whips in the long term but canes at least for serious pain play.

I've tried floggers, paddles, belts, and punching. Tried paddles and floggers etc but I'm not a fan, due to the psychological aspects. Kind of makes me feel like a kid at the principal's office, which is not what I'm going for. I need to endure torture, not discipline. All of them felt a little tame except the punching.

You assume that I don't want scars. [;)]

LadyPact -> RE: Newb Whip Question (2/22/2014 9:02:34 PM)

You did a really good thing by asking.

In My opinion, a whip is an exquisite thing. It's a thing of beauty, particularly if it's been crafted in leather.

A person skilled with a whip can get the intended result. Whether it is to be kissed on the skin or tear someone up like a razor, the person wielding the whip should be in enough control of it to know what they are doing.

Now, I don't consider Myself to be "expert" level on whips. I'm somewhere between adequate and proficient. Still, I'll answer anything that you would like to ask.

shadowborn61 -> RE: Newb Whip Question (2/22/2014 10:36:10 PM)

I would recommend a "buggy whip" or "lunge whip" to take a step up from what you have listed as having played with.
You can get them in varying lengths at your local farm supply store reasonably cheap. They have a lot of sting and leave some very nice marks that can last for days and make sitting very interesting. Also i would imagine that used in the extreme they could break the skin since that seems to be your end goal and while they do take some practice to use effectively the amount of time from purchase to play is very short. Just be sure you communicate so your partner knows the effect they are getting.

MissImmortalPain -> RE: Newb Whip Question (2/22/2014 10:41:07 PM)

My personal suggestion would be for a five foot 12 plate snake whip. Short enough to be easily controled and mean enough to carry a rather nice bite. A good one to start with while learning.

A quirt or a Moroccan camel whip would also be great, they pack one hell of a punch and are very easy to control as they are short, they look deceptively harmless, with good hand eye coordination, a week of practise and he should have enough control over it. I've got a number of single tails in leather and different length, a "liquid whip" (somebody made a latex one for me) and the 2 Moroccan camel whips, guys who can take a hell of a whipping with various single tails are terrified of the liquid one and the short camel whips.

DesFIP -> RE: Newb Whip Question (2/23/2014 1:45:03 PM)

Ask him if he's willing to put 50K into escrow for the plastic surgery required to fix the damage he proposes to do.
Seriously, until/if he's put months of practice into this, it's irresponsible to buy one and just use it. You could well be blinded as a result.

If he had never driven a car, would you agree to being a passenger while he drove at the highest possible speed?

It's funny that you mentioned a quirt. I was thinking the same thing as kind of a stepping stone. It doesn't take nearly as much skill to handle a quirt and it would probably make pg somewhat of a happy camper, while still yearning for that full whip in the meantime. From what I've read, he seems to have that masochism streak that would appreciate it.

LadyConstanze -> RE: Newb Whip Question (2/23/2014 2:09:35 PM)

LOL, if he likes the quirt then maybe move up to the camel whip, you need to get your hands on one, they look deceptively like quirts but just so much more painful (I guess camels are very thick skinned and stubborn, my only interaction with one was in Australia and the fucker bit me in the ass)

I hear they spit, too. [8D]

One of these days, I'm going to have to spend the time to take individual shots of all of the toys in the collection and upload them. (Would give Me a chance to show off My babies.)

shadowborn61 -> RE: Newb Whip Question (2/23/2014 8:04:21 PM)

Hmm my wife and i are in the process of splitting up and so i am not sure how much of our toy collection i will get to keep so i will at the least be looking to replace some of it.
It sucks but there isn't much to do but try and stay civil.

Dvr22999874 -> RE: Newb Whip Question (2/23/2014 8:07:01 PM)

Yeah, they are bad-tempered sons of bitches, aren't they LadyConstanze. But if your ass is worth biting, I can find some better looking volunteers than any camel.

pg4g -> RE: Newb Whip Question (2/23/2014 9:56:49 PM)

We'll probably get a sjambok, consider getting a quirt, and he's told me he wants to look at getting enough training with stuff like this before he touches me with it. I appreciate his restraint a lot... Well, that and I can avoid getting whipped for a while. [;)]

But scars? Yeah I gotta admit I love the idea of bearing scars from him.

He's being extremely careful and cautious with this, DesFIP. He just isn't involved in any forums or anything to ask himself, so I said I'd do that for him, and I'd already recommended going to a few demos at a leather club we know of.

This guy cares a ton about me, and will only act on things when he's confident he knows what he's doing. He's a very careful, methodical, reserved, caring guy. Some of the hundreds of things I like about him. Probably not best to jump to worst-case-scenarios...

Well (and I'm sure others have covered this)...you're newb.

Ergo...cutting is level 5 on a scale upwards of 3.75 (actually, I think that could possibly be, for you, on a scale of 1 - 100....a 6).

"Training": More. Any. You have none.

You're at level 1 (for at least several weeks, or until healing takes place).

It's really inappropriate for you to seek anything else.

That's pretty much all I have to add at this time.

DomDolf -> RE: Newb Whip Question (2/26/2014 4:03:57 PM)

If you decide to try the bullwhip... Have a very experienced person work with him to show him the basics and feel what a 'broken in" whip should feel like. It will be far different from a new whip. As silly as it sounds, use a plush toy to practice with. You can see the stroke marks that are left with the strike.

Safety advice...

Wear glasses
Tell him to forget "trying" to pop a bullwhip, just work at getting the action right. Most of the self-inflicted injuries I have seen are from people trying to pop a whip when they don't understand how it behaves with different strokes/actions.
Make a space large enough to fully extend the arm and the whip and then add at least two feet to account for any unexpected sudden movements from others and the bearer of the whip. The responsibility of items or people hit by the bearer is on them... no one else.
Don't be a cowboy - practice and practice some more. Showboating is dangerous.
Buy a high quality whip. Cheap is harder to predict and won't last as long.
Be patient

Edited to move an item from top paragraph to safety advice.
