Jewishprincess22 -> Mallinckrodt Concerta for ADD? (2/23/2014 10:35:25 AM)

I was given Concerta Mallinckrodt yesterday. Different than the Watson brand I've gotten for YEARS. I almost thought this was a joke. I have no sharp focus, and am extremely jittery. Also, I felt like for only two hours I was somewhat focused, whereas on my Watson Concerta I was focused all day. Anyone else tried this stuff?

I miss my Watson brand :(..

No, but I have had issues with different meds when the generic brand got switched. Even though it has to be the same active ingredient in the same amount by law, the "inactive" ingredients sometimes differ. A change in formulation can mean that the pill dissolves at a different speed - maybe this one dissolved a little faster and you got more medication over a shorter time span? Or you could be sensitive to the new pills' dye, or something like that.

So call your doctor, explain what is happening, and ask that they specify which brand they prescribe.

The watson generic is actually the original repackaged. While the majority of people don't have any type of sensitivity or problems with any generic drug, there are instances where people respond differntly and need to have one over the other.

For example, if I am given brand name percocet, it makes me nauseous. The generic does not. The inert ingredients, specifically the substance added to the narcotic to prevent abuse and overdose reacts differently for me in the brand name.

Its not unusual for doctors to specify no substitutions, although they will need to justify it to your insurance for them to cover the significantly more expensive brand name. Since watson is a marketed generic, specifying might be a bigger issue, I'm not really sure.

so if you don't want to go through the hassle, check with your pharmacist and tell them you prefer the watson generic. They will either special order that brand or you can find a pharmacy that uses that brand. If you have been using the same pharmacy for a period of time and have a long standing relationship with them, they will likely accommodate you. If you fill it willy nilly wherever you happen to be passing, then they might not.

Its always good to stick to one pharmacy so the pharmacist gets familiar with you and your medications.

I read the title and thought this thread would be about classical music therapy for ADD. (sighs) That would have been awesome. My 16 year old says classical music calms him down and helps him focus. Maybe some concerto mixed with your cconcerta?

Well I am adult ADD/HD, bipolar and have a bit of a social anxiety disorder (personally I think the shrinks are wrong about the last, I just aint a people person) and after being on a number of medications for the ADD, I have discovered that coffee is much more effective. In an ADD person, stimulants often have the opposite effect, and considering the effect of the bipolar meds and ADD meds together, I prefer the coffee.

Funny thing though, it seems that ADD keeps many hard pain killers from making me feel dopy. In fact, unless they put me under a general, I am not even drowsy. My last knee surgery they didnt scope it, they opened up the knee for the procedure. I kept trying to sit up and see what the doc was doing. He threatened to hit me with the hammer he was using to split my femur so he could raise the ligament over the patella.

Back in my late 20's, I tried taking prescription diet pills to lose weight. They knocked me out. Literally. I was geeked thinking I'd have all this energy to get things done and I was passed out on the couch. So, while I don't have a diagnosis of ADD and I don't want one, the signs are all there. In fact, when my doctor even hinted at it because of my response to the prescription amphetemines - he actually ducked. Like I would ever hit anyone! Maybe I gave him a weird look or something? [:D]

I have the same response to pain meds. They basically don't work on me. For the longest time I thought people who talked about pain meds knocking them out or being 'strong' were nuts. When I had eye surgery they literally had to put me to sleep (not typical) and when I go to the dentist a local or 9 or 10 shots won't cut it. They have to gas me.

I love caffeine, but have to be careful taking it as it is a vaso-constrictor and I have vasculitis. [:(] When I really need to focus and get things done, I throw caution to the wind and drink me some coffee.

Low doses of Adderall don't give me energy, they just help me focus a bit better and, oddly, calm the background anxiety. Coffee can substitute if necessary, but it doesn't do anything for anxiety and in excess can make it worse, so I try to limit my coffee drinking to a cup or at most two a day.

Not sure how I react to pain meds because I almost never take them. I don't think they work well for me, but by the time I'm reaching for one it's really bad or I wouldn't bother, and half of a leftover Vicodin from oral surgery isn't going to knock out a full-blown migraine anyway so it's hard to tell.
