I'm thinking of making a huge purchase for myself!
A Kitchen Aid mixer!
If you own one I'd like some feedback:

What model?
What size?
How has it lasted?
We are still renters, so it will likely be moving with us a few times, is yours fairly easy to move?

Do they make more than one size? I just bought the one JC Penny carried. A quick check says its 5 quarts.

It's heavy and fairly hard to move so it basically stays put on the counter all the time. It's 7 or 8 years old and has worked great. I'm not a hard core baker but I get a fair amount of use out of it.

I bought the pasta roller attachment a few years back and use it for that more than I use it as a mixer.

I am a chef and at home I use a Kenwood Chef Premier, which came with a number of useful attacments ( meat grinder etc). It works like a charm and uses metal gearing rather than the older models and some other brands that use nylon gears.
We were lucky enough to get it on sale and the company we bought it from (which shall remain nameless) sent us 18 bottles of mixed wines as a promo. It was so bad though that I gave it away to some wine-conoisseurs in the local park. They haven't spoken to me since.
The machine though, I cannot fault and I would reccommend it to anybody.

My mother's stand mixer is at least 40 years old.

My man's mother doesn't cook anymore and I have just received hers, which is at least 30 years old - perhaps you have an elderly relative who doesn't use hers either? Or try freecycle, craigslist, or thrift shops?

His mom's is a Sunbeam Mixmaster with two bowls - the small one is 6 C and the big one is...bigger. It came with whisks and dough hooks.

Today and yesterday, I used it to make Old-Fashioned Chocolate Layer Cake for my brother's bday. (This recipe came out great but was a HUGE time commitment and the frosting was fussy.)

I sent a piece home for his mom, as I did with the chocolate mousse I made for Valentine Day, and the dinner rolls I made last weekend.

If I were buying, I'd go with the # 1 or 2 KitchenAid:

My mother's is 45 years old......and it's a Sunbeam that was used to make cake batter and icing for wedding cakes.

I"ve been wanting one of these BADLY for a couple years now. I'm getting closer to being financially able to maybe this summer.....

A tip...... QVC ran them this weekend for a pretty good price with about a dozen colors to choose from. I think the price was $288, down from $349, and I think that included an extra beater attachment. And they have flex-pay of $47/month for six months. I was sorely tempted but held back till some other bills are paid off :( They're on the QVC website if you're interested.

So most importantly, what color are you getting? [:)]

Any color thats cheap.
I was in car sales for a while, I learned to not commit to the color until I heard the price haha.

But if I had unlimited funding- I'd get the 6 quart green apple. I think its so cute.

Thanks for all the tips thus far. Unfortunately- no older relatives with one.
My parents and I run a restaurant that seems to get dibs on the hand-me down kitchen appliances before I can.

I want the green apple, too! This month, anyway, I tend to change my mind with the wind, lol. I'm also fond of the cobalt blue, the gloss cinnamon and the new persimmon. I've seen the plain white ones at Walmart for as little as $179 around the holidays.

Also- you should check out refurbished models on Overstock. There are a couple there I currently have my eye on, although after this thread I'm now looking into sunbeams.

Oh, I already have! They're about $249 in there. And the Kitchenaid site itself has a refurbished section, too.

I think they only come in one size. I love mine. I would be lost without it. If you like to bake it is awesome. I got mine years ago and it still works great.

I rarely bake but have wanted one of those fo so long! I like the dough attachment because I just don't have the strength to mix bread dough. Of course I want a bread maker too, lol.

I got a Kitchen Aid mini food processor in a multi surprise item box from craigs list. I ha a little trouble figuring out how to get the blade is (slicer/grate blade was no trouble) but now I have and I love it. My friend is planning on staring an herb garden with like 6 different types of basil. I can't wait to try to mmake homemade pesto.

We got SO much basil last year, pesto all the time, we have a Kitchen Aid food processor too. I adore it.

I can't wait for summer when I have farmers markets and deliciousness from my own herb garden to work with. So excited!

I got the big one from Costco. (the one I chose is red) They are on sale a couple of times a year at Costco and always come with more accessories than buying them elsewhere. I love it.
