Um you tolerance people know that they don't celebrate Cinco De Mayo in Mexico other than Puebla, right?

To most of Mexico May fifth is just another day.

I had forgotten that.

Paladinagain -> RE: First it was press one for english, now.... (2/28/2014 11:42:19 AM)

again,..........we don't have a "broken" immigration system,........we have an "unenforced" one.

Why anyone would believe the government on anything is beyond comprihension to the sane.

mnottertail -> RE: First it was press one for english, now.... (2/28/2014 11:47:10 AM)

Well, no, its broken.  You have two major issues, the enforcement money is slashed to shit, and the politicians will not go after business.  they keep fuckn around with individual horseshit which is very expensive, but makes nutsackers feel good.

You go after employers hard with both feet, so they find it not worth their time to hire the guys, problem solved tonight.

How do the intolerant people know that?  Interestingly enough, we dont celebrate cinco deMayo either up here.

Instead of "celebrating" Columbus day......we commemorate the start of the holocaust Europe inflicted on the Americas.

As well, we have corporate America (the POS 1%ers) and many republicans secretly encouraging and benefiting, from illegal immigration....

There is nothing in the article saying the Mexican flag was worn to school.

The supremacy of school order over student freedom of speech is well established law.

Italian Americans celebrate Columbus Day; Irish Americans celebrate St Patricks Day; Puerto Rican Americans have their parade in NYC. None of us wish to 'haul our asses" back to our country of origins. Maybe we should return Texas to its original status as a Mexican state and California as well.

As an Italian American I find your comments offensive.

Do Irish, Italian, or Puerto Ricans threaten racial tension over the fact students where US flags to high school?

Three students who wore the flag of their country and were told to go home or wear the shirts inside out on Cinco De Mayo because it might upset the Hispanic students celebrating "their" holiday. That is a bunch of bullshit.

You dont find the fact those students could not wear shirts with the US flag to school offensive?

It was not the Hispanic students who threatened racial tension; it was the school administrators who perceived the danger and acted correctly in their assigned roles from past racial experience in American schools. I suggest you stop twisting the facts of the story as it appears in the article and stop scapegoating the minority students. The feigned outrage is an old nativist ploy.

Would you approve the wearing of Confederate Rebel shirts by white students in the public schools of South Chicago to celebrate the birthday of Jefferson Davis? No school administrator who has any sense of maintaining an orderly and safe learning environment would condone the wearing of any 'baiting' shirts. I think you are way off base in your position on this one Jlf.

You do realize that your example applies more to Hispanics wearing a Mexican flag shirt than the Americans wearing
a U S flag, don't you?

Maybe you are right, if wearing the likeness of the American Flag in an American school is going to cause racial tension, while other people of different heritage can celebrate theirs... Yep you are right.

Might I suggest we design a new flag for the United States?

How about a white flag with a Velcro square in the center with the instructions insert national symbol of your choice. Or one with a chicken on it, since it seems we are afraid of hurting the feelings of people who dont feel the American flag is appropriate any more?

We have had Texas 170 years, Mexico had it for 26 maybe they should get over it.

Here is another version of the story where threats were reportedly made by Mexican American students:

Officials at Live Oak High School banned American flags on May 5, 2010 because the year before there had been altercations between white students and Mexican students. There were American flags and chants of “USA.” According to reports, there were also Mexican flags and kids running around saying, “Fuck them white boys. Let’s fuck them up.”

The high school, located 20 miles south of San Jose, is has had numerous gang problems. Nevertheless, the school seems to have organized an impressive Cinco de Mayo celebration.

On Cinco de Mayo in 2010, a handful of students showed up with shirts emblazoned with American flags. The principal told those students to turn the shirts inside out or leave school.

All kinds of threats against those flag-wearing students occurred around May 5, 2010 as well.

School administrators at Live Oak High School – a school with a predominant Mexican-American student-body – had called the patriotic apparel “incendiary.” (RELATED: Students threatened with suspension for wearing U.S. colors on Cinco de Mayo)

Students of Mexican heritage told local media that the American flag-festooned students should apologize. They said ethnically Mexican students wouldn’t wear a Mexican flag on the Fourth of July (not a school day, but never mind).

The Ninth Circuit held that school officials have wide latitude to limit freedom of expression.

SOURCE

I don't know how reliable this source is but I want to cover all possibilities.

As I understand it this is a predominantly Mexican American student body school and the celebration of ethnic pride was sponsored by the school. And yes perhaps there were threats by M/A students or 'thugs' (the new n-word) So, if a South Chicago school sponsored a black history day in February and encouraged kids to wear green/red/black Africa shirts would white students be justified in wearing Confederate shirts? Don't you think they would be baiting the black kids? I think so. The issue here is the "baiting" imo.

OverUGo -> RE: First it was press one for english, now.... (2/28/2014 2:45:49 PM)

If the school REALLY wanted to TEACH something, perhaps they could get ALL THE KIDS interested
in the actual history of MEXICO. But nooooooooooooo, that is not a topic that "educators" want to touch.

So you are equating the American flag with the Confederate one?

jlf1961 -> RE: First it was press one for english, now.... (2/28/2014 2:58:48 PM)

Does Cinco De mayo have one fucking thing to do with US History? No. As someone pointed out, it is really only celebrated as a big deal in one town in Mexico.

So why the fuck are these people making such a big deal of it here?

Why the hell is the school even arranging a school sponsored celebration?

I dunno, why is there a Columbus Day?  what the fuck did he ever do?

Opened the way for the Spanish to bring small pox, tuberculosis, and other wonderful presents for Native Americans.

18 million Native Americans in North and South America in 1492 before Columbus, and by 1650 there are only 9 million Native Americans left. It is estimated that 90% died from disease, 10% from warfare with Europeans.

Mexicans planted gardens and mowed lawns and cut cabbage here, so they should get a day.

JLF, Americans are the majority, by far. Wearing the flag just doesn't mean the same thing. Fux News knows this. In the UK, Jamaicans sometimes throw the Jamaican flag around. Who cares? It's not as if the UK is ever going to be in danger of becoming a 'second Jamaica'. I have to say, if I were in charge of a bunch of bratty violent teenagers who were spoiling for a fight, I'd adopt the same policy as the school principal, here. They'll have rules imposed on them that they won't like till they can stop acting like bratty violent teenagers, and that's that. High Moral Principles are for grown ups, not for childish little gits who are in search of any reason at all to divide the world into 'good guys' and 'bad guys' and therefore a reason to beat each other up.

Personally, in that principal's postion, any kid who broke my rule, I'd pack off home so that he could express his principles vociferously in front of the mirror, along with expressing the pus from his adolescent pimples. Kids can be, and generally are, admirably idealistic, but at absolutely the same time, utterly nasty, selfish little twats. This is why adults' ethical principles aren't applied to them in exactly the same way as they are to adults.

But if you go on about the flag, isn't there something that the flag should be treated with reference and not be turned into an item of clothing...

Ahhh yes, I remember (took me a bit longer since I'm not a US citizen), it's that thing called the Flag Code, section 8: Respect For Flag, which states in part: "The flag should never be used as wearing apparel, bedding, or drapery", and "No part of the flag should ever be used as a costume or athletic uniform".

So basically by wearing the flag as a t-shirt you're disrespecting it...

As for celebrating some Hispanic holiday, we got to stop all that nonsense ASAP, especially those pagan celebrations, Xmas, Easter, etc.

The way I have always understood that was you couldn't take a flag and turn it into a shirt. I am not sure having a pic of the flag on your shirt is the same.

As far as kids celebrating holidays...I think its' great. The more they learn about other cultures, the better and what better way.

op - I don't understand why they aren't focusing on why the kids seem to think violence is the answer to everything. It reminds me of the gun problem with people focusing on the weapon and not trying to find out why they hate so much that they are willing to kill themselves and others.

you do realize that those bratty violent teenagers are not the ones being told they can't wear the shirts right?
