Never had to use it but I had some in my house at the last home I owned. We would have bears wander through the back yard every once in awhile and I had a young child. So I kept it on hand in case I ever had to use it. Thankfully I never had to though.

I don't think it's as necessary for black bears as it might be for brown or grizzlies. Basically, making a lot of noise will cause them to retreat as long as you aren't standing between a mother and a cub.

However, when people ask permission to hunt here, I have started adding "get a bear permit" to the "are you looking for a trophy deer or will you shoot does?". I don't want any bear meat myself, but I would have been a lot happier if someone had shot the one living at the back of my property.
