If any institution needed a breath of fresh air the Catholic Church needed it. Francis seems to be pretty close to the ideal breath of fresh air for that troubled insitution.

In a very short period of time, he has forced cynical critics of the Church like me to reconsider their views, and caused a lot of people previously hostile to the Church to think again. It remains to be seen whether he will succeed in following through on the institutional and doctrinal changes necessary to complement the changes in the Church's image he has achieved.

Let's hope he succeeds in that task, and that the changes he engineers are more than merely cosmetic.

When President Obama came to office, I and many others were hoping Washington could change for the better. I believe the President felt the same way. His first few years is marked with him trying to reach across the isle unsuccessfully a number of times. Over time, I think he's largely given up on that concept. But he is not the failure in the equation. It takes a good amount of Americans in not only all three branches of government but in secondary tier locations, to improve government for Americans. A very concentrated effort in which those involved are not tempted to sway away through bribery, egotism, trickery, or sensationism.

The pope could learn a lot from the US Government on why an organization becomes hostile to the very people its around. An that would mean his inner and outer circles might do better to be filled with individuals seeking real changes in the mentality and viewpoints rather than giving it dusting.
