ORIGINAL: jlf1961 I was looking into the area along the Lehigh valley in Eastern PA. Lots of granite... It's actually mostly shale and slate and fairly heavily built up. But anywhere North of there is where you really want to be. The fog generates itself, you can go for miles without seeing another house, gravel roads. Bears, raccoons and coyotes. Driving is dangerous due to all the deer. No local cops - only State Troopers who are often 45 minutes or an hour away. Rednecks everywhere. Sure, it's all slate and coal, no granite - but a lot of it's been strip mined which gives it an eerie (not to be confused with Erie, PA which is much further South) landscape at times. Erie is South ? Erie is about as far North-West as you can go and still be in Pennsylvania. I live about an hour North of Lehigh Valley in Luzerne County in Pennsyltucky. We are a commonwealth which makes for some interesting differences in how people view their lives. We are an "open carry" place and I have been told by my gun owning neighbors that CC permits are not tough to come by. There is a plethora of wildlife here but there's an amazing lack of knowledge about that wildlife (I was in a county park and saw a sign, telling hikers that Northern Copperheads will not attack unless provoked which is pure, undiluted horse crap). People are friendly and welcoming and I have noticed that land that isn't zoned for commercial use is relatively cheap. I saw a 600 acre piece of land for sale and when I called, it was well under $5,000 per acre; a little too rich for my blood but not completely unrealistic. If you're really interested in some land in this area (we call it: "NEPA" or "The NEPA Valley"), I'm in the process of doing a lot of travelling, looking for assisted living care facilities so I could keep my eyes open.
