run up the kitchen heard in rural Ohio, cleaning up the kitchen after dinner

I was raised in rural Ohio....we always said "rid" up the kitchen, or the dishes from the table, not run. But it may have varied according to the regions, lol. I think some people say "red" them up.

Southeastern rural Ohio, they put a strong "r" sound in "wash". We warsh with warshrags, not washcloths, and George Warshington was our first president.

We tend to say "cookout" instead of barbecue. And we have a "gift exchange" for Christmas. On the east coast, they call it a Pollyanna.

My son, who moved to South Carolina a year ago, just told me last night they were "fixin'" to come up for a visit next week, lol.

Thanks for the link. Ah, not heard it for ages. Never once thought to look up 'egg cream', though. I assumed it was a poetic sort of invention of Mr Reed's own.

It really does sound quite rude, doesn't it? I might stop and think twice in front of a very young copper before saying to any children who happen to be in my charge, 'I'm going to give you toad in the hole, tonight!'

The difference in typical usage of Asian was a bit confusing at one point, the difference in pants amusing. Some teacher in high school had this poster up on the wall, and it had a visceral effect – a feeling a grammatical wrongness creeping down my spine – every time I looked at it.

Partly pronunciation, but on the topic of regional differences within the US, The New York Times’ Dialect Quiz is kind of fun: How Y’all, Youse and You Guys Talk

That poster would drive me freaking crazy. I could just see myself trying to not look but unable to look away, and scratching the skin off the back of my neck as a result.

The quiz was spot on, it guessed right: Detroit, MI.

It was somewhat off for me - by the distance of the Atlantic. it reckoned that I was from Yonkers, New Jersey or New York.

Mind you, I know now what parts of the USA will have the people whose language a southern Brit might find easiest to understand.

theshytype -> RE: Fortnight regional language (3/15/2014 6:17:24 PM)

Yeah, I'd say it was just a wee bit off for you.

yeah ok so my spelling isnt excellent and the out and face are dodgy as hell, sorry.
my dialect isnt too shabby,
I cant remember WHY this particular phrase has stuck with me for so many years but it was a description of a drunk guy who had an argument with a wall.

myotherself -> RE: Fortnight regional language (3/16/2014 1:32:23 AM)

Not bad Lucy! Although 'face' would sound more like 'f-yes' round here [:D]

I was in the supermarket last night when I overheard some delightful young ladies having a heated discussion.

Both ladies were clearly chavs with cooncil hoose facelifts, coke-can fringes and parrot-perchers hanging oot tha lugs.

One said to the other 'the cheeky get tellt uz to sling me hook!'.

Her friend replied 'Ah'd twat the fecker if ah wus ye! Stick ya fist in hes gob!'.

Lucylastic -> RE: Fortnight regional language (3/16/2014 1:40:57 AM)

Dvr22999874 -> RE: Fortnight regional language (3/16/2014 2:38:40 AM)

I once sailed on a ship out of Falmouth with Cornishmen, Irishmen (north and south) Glaswegians, Stornowegians, Norfolk dumpings, a couple of Taffs, a Scouse chief cook and a Brummy galley-boy and 3 or 4 Londoners....................................and you think they need translators at the United Nations ????
