I was raised in rural Ohio....we always said "rid" up the kitchen, or the dishes from the table, not run. But it may have varied according to the regions, lol. I think some people say "red" them up.

Southeastern rural Ohio, they put a strong "r" sound in "wash". We warsh with warshrags, not washcloths, and George Warshington was our first president.

We tend to say "cookout" instead of barbecue. And we have a "gift exchange" for Christmas. On the east coast, they call it a Pollyanna.

My son, who moved to South Carolina a year ago, just told me last night they were "fixin'" to come up for a visit next week, lol.

Thanks for the link. Ah, not heard it for ages. Never once thought to look up 'egg cream', though. I assumed it was a poetic sort of invention of Mr Reed's own.

It really does sound quite rude, doesn't it? I might stop and think twice in front of a very young copper before saying to any children who happen to be in my charge, 'I'm going to give you toad in the hole, tonight!'

Mind you, I know now what parts of the USA will have the people whose language a southern Brit might find easiest to understand.

yeah ok so my spelling isnt excellent and the out and face are dodgy as hell, sorry.
my dialect isnt too shabby,
I cant remember WHY this particular phrase has stuck with me for so many years but it was a description of a drunk guy who had an argument with a wall.

I was in the supermarket last night when I overheard some delightful young ladies having a heated discussion.

Both ladies were clearly chavs with cooncil hoose facelifts, coke-can fringes and parrot-perchers hanging oot tha lugs.

One said to the other 'the cheeky get tellt uz to sling me hook!'.

Her friend replied 'Ah'd twat the fecker if ah wus ye! Stick ya fist in hes gob!'.
