LadyConstanze -> RE: To The Fatty Running On The Track This Afternoon: I Really Hope You Read This. (3/19/2014 7:08:19 AM)

The link Alexis supplied had a post about the blogger flying and a rant about basically everything but fat people on planes. I spent a transatlantic flight (I always take aisle due to me drinking a lot of water so I have access to the bathroom without making others get up) being literally being pushed out into the aisle because the person next to me took up most of my space and I couldn't put the armrest down as her bulk wouldn't allow it. When I tried to change positions as my back was hurting and my arms and legs cramping, she sighted as if I had done something wrong and shot me filthy looks, complained the whole flight about her lack of space, the guy on the window seat finally said "I know how you feel, I'm also suffering from lack of space and it's not self-inflicted" and she had a fit about how she's discriminated and it's not her fault. She munched her way across the Atlantic through carrier bags of sweets she got at the duty free, so I don't think it was genetic. After I got off after roughly 8 hours flight in Philly, I could barley move my neck, backpain from hell, shoulder felt like I had wrestled with the Hulk, then through immigration (not a great experience at the best of times) and off to another 6 or 7 flight to LA. I was so absolutely knackered. I still have her complains in my ear (pretty much non stop, which is a long long time on a transatlantic flight) about how they should make bigger seats for people that aren't anorexic (nice, so apparently everybody who's not plus sized or super sized must be anorexic, alright for her to insult everybody else apparently), it took about all my willpower to not snap "Or you book 2 seats instead of squashing the ones next to you!" or risk a hernia by dragging her to emergency exit and pushing her out. I'm still furious when I think about that rude woman and her behaviour and I swear if that happens again, I will request another seat, because I paid for my seat, I should have mine!

I'm a bit like you, unless I know and like somebody, I don't want to be hugged or touched and people being too close make me uncomfy

theshytype -> RE: To The Fatty Running On The Track This Afternoon: I Really Hope You Read This. (3/19/2014 9:48:03 AM)

I see now.

Your situation would have been awful and it would have taken me some major tongue biting.  I can agree that airlines try to pack too much in a plane, I'd be right there with her.  But when she played the anorexic card, I don't believe that would have been possible for me.

I'm probably going to regret sharing this, but I'm in a giving mood.

During a portion of my High School years, I was anorexic.  Because of my frame (I have a medium frame with, what I consider, great hips) no one could really tell what I was going through.  They couldn't see the pain I was in when I'd try to sit back in the desk chairs, my spine poking into it.  They didn't look at my fingers.  I was told how great I looked.

It takes a lot to turn me into bitch mode, but it sounds like she would have pushed the right buttons.

It upsets me when people see small framed, skinny women and claim anorexia.
Those aren't the only ones suffering from it.  And not being anorexic now, it would be extremely offensive being accused of such just because I fit in an airline seat.

Yeah.  It goes both ways.  She was judging others to cope with how she perceived others to be judging her.  I don't understand the logic where one is okay but the other is not.

LadyConstanze -> RE: To The Fatty Running On The Track This Afternoon: I Really Hope You Read This. (3/19/2014 10:20:06 AM)

I had my battle with eating disorders, when my thyroid struck as a teenager, it took a while to figure it out (it was such a relief and the pills made so much difference) and the sneak eating accusations made me just refuse food, due to the messed up metabolism the only way to control my weight before I was medicated was simply not eating. Not healthy or smart but with 13 you don't tend to make the smartest choices. I still can't do diets where I need to count calories or go a while without eating, because I'm far too tempted to get back into old habits...

The plane was full with normal people, not just skinny, small framed people, quite a few larger ones but not quite that large, yeah the seats aren't comfy but hey, that's what you get when you book cattle class and most companies don't spring for business class anymore, it's fine but her being a bitch to everybody and playing the victim card, I was just seething, but since she was so loud mouthed, it really would have escalated. I was just thinking next time I kick a fuss and say "I paid for this seat, I want my seat! Put her wherever, that armrest goes down! If I'm not having the seat I paid for, I want my money back!"
Actually, I felt mostly sorry for the flight attendants, she was unpleasant about everything, starting from beverages (how dare they charge for alcoholic drinks), to the food (doesn't taste of much and tiny portions), to having to wait to use the toilet (like others didn't) to the never ending rant that her seat is far too small, why she can't have the seat by the emergency exit, somebody had reserved them and paid extra, plus they tend to put able bodied people there who can help others in case of an emergency, not people who'd block the exit.

The real funny thing was that when she went to the toilet (again complaining about how small the corridor is and how far away from her seat the toilet is) an elderly gent who looked a bit like Santa just said "Oh a kingdom for a row boat!" and the lady with him said "What have the sharks ever done to you?" The whole area just tittered.

I almost did not read this....I figured it was just another fat thread. Thank You tazzy, I am so glad I took the time to read it......its also nice to see you posting again.

+ 1 to all of the above!

ShaharThorne -> RE: To The Fatty Running On The Track This Afternoon: I Really Hope You Read This. (3/20/2014 2:12:42 AM)

I am a fatty who prefers to sit by herself on the bus (Greyhound). Reason...I take my crocheting and jams with me on board. The yarn cushions the jars that I am taking to Lizard (she loves homemade jellies and jams) and I am usually working on a project, most of the time a baby blanket. I don't fly at all. If there is no seat available, I will sit with someone if the overhead has a spot.

Airline seats are small. I think most adults are pretty uncomfortable flying economy regardless of body type. And being big enough that you can't put the armrests down must be a really unpleasant experience while flying. Even if you're happy with your body, it's extra discomfort and potential humiliation knowing you're going to be rubbing up against strangers who are also more uncomfortable because of your presence. It must be pretty distressing, I have a lot of sympathy. First class is much comfier, but so very expensive and some journeys are not optional.

On the other hand, the article on that site was pretty crazy. She took offence that people assumed bigger people take up more room. Well... of course they do. It's not discrimination, it's physics. An adult takes up more space than a baby, too.

theshytype -> RE: To The Fatty Running On The Track This Afternoon: I Really Hope You Read This. (3/20/2014 4:53:58 AM)

I don't have sympathy for overweight people on an airplane. I have sympathy for everyone on an airplane.
Most people have their own issues. Some are more visual than others. Everyone is making it a choice to be there, but it still sucks for most everyone. I feel sympathy for the young couple carting their little children around that are met with moans and eye rolls. I feel sympathy for others that are obviously uncomfortable near strangers. Or the possible germaphobe. Or the businessman who appears just annoyed, only to find out he's exhausted and has to immediately attend meetings after a few flights. Or the elderly and disabled that may not move as quickly and get to hear people make rude comments as to why the line isn't moving fast. Being overweight is not going to warrant extra sympathy from me. It's just not.

I flew with my first born when he was 10 weeks old and he cried all the way to America. I can imagine how awful that was for all the passengers and I remember that flight like it was yesterday. It seemed no matter what I did, he just kept on hollowing. A young couple sitting next to me asked me if he would like some chocolate peanuts and this silly old cow getting up from her seat to come over and say, if he was mine I would give him such a slap. Even at 18 I was pissed off enough to say, 'if I get chance to get up from this seat I'll come over and give you a slap'.

Reading LC's account of that very unpleasant flight reminded me of a recent flight I took from the UK to Italy. I managed to get a window seat near the front but no sooner had I settled in than Super Mario decides to sit next to me. He had great difficulty getting into his seat and elbowed me into a small corner of my seat so he would have more room. The entire flight was body against body even though I had moved as far away from him as possible. Fortunately that was a short flight. I can't imagine a long flight being so uncomfortable.

I don't ever poke fun at obesity. There are many medical reasons why people get super sized. My niece has a brain tumour and the meds she's on have caused morbid obesity. She's young and beautiful and she's dying, not from the tumour but the meds that keep her alive and it breaks my heart when she tells me how many people tease her and spit 'fat bitch' in her face.

I feel sorry for people that over eat because I believe its a combination of discontentment and being brought up to eat to excess. I know people who have desperately tried to lose the lbs and becoming totally disillusioned at how slow the weight drops off and I know people who eat the same as I do but are twice the size. What I don't like are those who carry a huge chip on their shoulder and can't help but berate and tell off slim people.

MercTech -> RE: To The Fatty Running On The Track This Afternoon: I Really Hope You Read This. (3/20/2014 9:37:19 AM)

About large people on airplanes:

In an attempt to teach all customers to be sardines; airlines have reduced seat size and seat clearance over and over for decades. A fellow who is over 5'10" and weighs over 200# has only four seats (for most designs) available in the whole plane that do not require the person to have their knees slamming against the seat in front of them. And, those seats with plenty of leg clearance get reserved to those with special needs and the frequent business flyers. I do feel a bit sorry for people sitting next to me as they are getting my shoulder 1/2 inch from their face unless I scrunch my shoulders together.

I'm six foot one inch and built large. (8-1/4 hat size even) Even during at my meanest and leanest military time; airline seats with the arm rest down required me to force my hips in like a cork in a bottle. (Yeah, I've always been built like a 55 gallon drum stuck up on tree trunks.) Air flight, to me, has always been a study in tolerating slow torture. (Except when my cousin the stewardess slipped me some 1st class upgrade coupons.) Since they added on TSA ineffective idiocy on top of torture device seats; I'm not flying unless there is big money at the other end.

Many of the airlines (1990s for sure, with the airlines losing money they may have backed off) have a weight limit for passengers. They required persons over 400 lb (28.6 stone?) to purchase two seats in order to fly.

Anyway, one other poster's comment pressed a frustrated rant button. Trust me on this; until you have had to live outside the 1 sigma bell curve spread, you have no clue on the frustration you get with being blamed for not being average.

Try finding a hat larger than 7-3/4
Try finding a shoe in 4E width.
Try finding a safety shoe that you can cram a 4E width foot into that doesn't leave the toes bloody. (they use the same size steel toe cap for 4E that they do for medium width shoes)
Try finding shirts that come in actual sizes (neck and sleeve length) rather than S,M,L as those shirts give you sleeves that come to halfway between wrist and elbow. And, most have tails that stop above your belt line.
Try having your choices of apparel that fits limited to conservative business wear and golf wear.
Try finding jeans in 32 or 34 inseam. (If your waist is above 34, you MUST be short and fat!)

I don't know if you guys caught this runner's response to this guy, but it was pretty bitchin' (awesome beyond words). And it kind of showed how silly sometimes people can be in the presumptions of others, especially when it actually takes a lot more courage to confront the balks and gawks and stares during a very personal journey. Her response was as follows:The "Fatty's" Response

This is my favorite part of it. Damn! "So next time you look at me on that track do yourself a favor. Look away. I do not look like I once did. I do not want to be your inspiration or your motivation."

Oh how horrible...

Maybe you try having a tiny waist and large boobs with a small ribcage...
Try finding the right bras
Try finding skirts that fit your hips but don't gape at the waist
Try finding a dress
Try finding business wear
Small hand and feet with long fingers and toes
Try finding gloves that fit and where the finger length fits
Try finding shoes where you don't slide around
Try finding lady's shoes size 5 and don't get referred to the kid's department

Shit, I never knew that this puts me into a "special" drawer, I thought it's just one of those things life hands you and you deal with it.

Hubby played rugby so his shoulders are really broad and his chest looks like a freaking barrel, he fits into airline seats. Airline seats are no different than renting a seat anywhere, you get a certain space assigned to you, in case that isn't enough you have to rent more space, it's NOT OK to take the space of another person. If you rent a house, would you be OK if I go to that house and just use part of your space because the one I rented doesn't have enough space for me? I guess not, see, that's why I want the small space that I rented for myself, it's an uncomfy small space, yes, the price for cheap flights, no need to have it made more uncomfy by somebody else. Unless of course I get special rights for "living outside some 1 sigma bell curve spread" because I have to spend more for clothes and that magically makes me "entitled" to take something from somebody else....

GoddessManko, thanks for that link.

theshytype -> RE: To The Fatty Running On The Track This Afternoon: I Really Hope You Read This. (3/20/2014 11:13:06 AM)

I don't believe anyone here has blamed the actual person for taking up more room, and has been stated, myself included, they pack way too much into a tiny plane.  I think that's an obvious.

I even pointed out that had I been sitting next to the person in LC's case, I would have agreed with her and allowed her to vent her frustration...until she verbally attacked and/or complained about others.

I had actually sat next to a man before who was built like a tank, similar to how you describe yourself.  He wasn't obese, just a large-built man.  He saw my discomfort and apologized.  I reassured him it was fine, he didn't have to apologize (and shouldn't feel the need to), and that I didn't understand why they had to pack everything so tightly.  He even asked if it was alright he took the armrest, which was extremely polite of him.  I didn't tell him my issue, no need to try to make him feel bad.  I had sympathy for him, and him for me.  We were both uncomfortable together.

Do you know what claustrophobia feels like?   That's how I feel when people get too close to me.  I'm perfectly fine in small spaces, but feel completely closed in and trapped, a bit of a panicky feeling, when strangers are too close for a period of time.  If I'm adjusting myself to play keep away, and an overweight person took it as disgust for their size, my sympathy for them has flown out the emergency exit.  I cannot extend sympathy out to those that do not for others.

My issues may be unseen, but I still have issues.  I have sympathy for obese individuals (they were included in my sympathy for everyone statement in my last post), not ones that have miserable attitudes towards others.

Point is, flying is a miserable experience for most everyone.  What makes it miserable will vary from person to person.
Being obese doesn't carry EXTRA sympathy from me because they're no more special than the next person in my eyes.  They're not the only one with struggles they need to work around.
In my eyes, there are two types of people: those with issues and those with issues that try to make everyone around them miserable because of those issues.

So yeah, I try not to touch others on the plane and will continue to blame the airlines for being greedy.  But to any person that acts as an asshole, that's not the airlines fault.

And, quite frankly, I don't need to understand the struggles you go through with clothing. Women, I believe, have plenty of struggles with that. Having a hour-glass figure, I'm apparently supposed to have a large bust to accompany it. I also have to choose between having pants fit around the waist, tight on the ass and thighs, or fit the ass and thighs, loose around the waist. I have my own issues with clothing, thank you.

LOL touche! I thought I deleted all of my indicators towards the female gender when I read through the entire response but lo and behold! "her" is still on there. :)
The "fatty" was male guys. Sorry for that.

And my pleasure really AlexisAnew, I just really enjoyed that when I read it and thought I'd share.

How do we know the subject was male? Because Tony said so? I didnt read anything in the original that led to the sex of the person working out.

The "Fatty" could be anyone. The word "Fatty" was used to grab attention... worked huh.

Unless I missed the original writer mentioning something specific that would lead to whoever was actually running. If I did, could you point it out to me?

I agree, I was simply responding to the GM's commentary about the "her response" (eg, the letter written by Tony). When I read Tony's missive I had the same question, "Uh, how in hell did Tony know who was being written about?"

Insofar as the "original piece", my understanding is that it's not the original piece. It's a plagiarized rip-off of something else so right off the bat we can conclude it's entirely made up bullshit because it is.

I meant original as being the first in this thread. I have no clue where the original thought or inspiration came from. Sorry if that was confusing.

Yeah, I wonder if there was a gender reference in the actual original piece. Sunshinemiss had that at one point. It could be the actual original piece gave Tony enough insight to figure out he was the subject.
