Just Curious.

Here in Western New York it is pop.

What is it where you live?

Down in the REAL NY (You know... below the white plains line ) we call is soda... but in order to pronounce it correctly you have to say soder (it ends with an "a" so it has an "r" sound. If it ends with an "r" its an "a" sound, IE wahta - water, quahta - quarter, dawta - daughter).

Add me to this list. That's the term I grew up on.

Am I understanding this right? You use "Coke" as a generic term for any flavored carbonated beverage?

That 7 Up and Mountain Dew are "Coke," to you the same way that they (and actual Coke) are "pop" to me?

Yes. When it comes to the particular flavor, we'll get specific on brand, but where others would say soda, pop, or soft drink, it's coke.

"Wanna coke?"

"yeah."

"What kind?"

"Coke"

Well, 7 Up and Mtn Dew are Pepsi products, so we would just call them 'wrong".

Here in Northwest Washington, it's called pop. But to keep everyone happy, I usually call it soda pop.

I wonder what the parents paying the tuition thought, when they found out this was what Johnny was learning.

Funny. I only lived in sourthern Indiana a very short time, but must have picked it up there.

Soda here.
I'm told Atlanta residents refer to it as Coke because that's where the Coke headquarters are, and when the city was smaller, the influence of the Coke company on the city was huge.

soda pop even when I am referring to Diet MD. If I want a specific one (Wild Cherry Pepsi, cherry coke) I call it by its name. Plain Coke if I just want to make a Chocolate Coke (damn you Johnny Rockets!)

We'd say 'a fizzy drink'. My grandma used to call it pop though.

Hey lw....can I ask where you grew up? I used to live in DuBois back in the early 90s....and my Mom is from the Reading/Lancaster/Lebanon area....Pennsylvania Dutch country.

In Delaware and Eastern Pennsylvania we call it soda....I know they call it "pop" when you get out as far west as Pittsburgh though. '

I've always wondered where that dividing line in Pennsylvania and NY are.....where does "soda" stop and "pop" begin?

(Edited after seeing the map...)

I think it's interesting how eastern Missouri/western Illinois and eastern Wisconsin are llike "pockets of soda" amidst a sea of "pop" and "Coke".

pop for fizzy fruit flavoured stuff.

juice for still, dilute fruit flavoured stuff

fruit juice for naturally squeezed stuff.

soda in the UK in my circles refers to carbonated water for mixing with Whiskey, or if some heathen looks at you gone out then it's Sparkling Water.

I say pop. I get soft drink, soda, anything having soda or fizzy in it. I just don't understand using coke as a general term.
I remember one time traveling down south when I was younger, I had asked for a pop and the girl didn't know what I was asking for until I specified coke, at which point she asked me what kind. I was so confused, as was she.
