jlf1961 -> A question for the gourmets out there (3/17/2014 6:23:13 AM)

There is a continuing argument in my house concerning the proper way of making a delicacy which should be on every menu in ever restaurant.

What is the proper way of making SOS?

Now, growing up in a military home, SOS was made with ground beef, in a medium to thick white gravy over toast and over medium eggs.

My adopted sister insists that you use Hormel dried beef in a thin gravy, over toast and no eggs.

Now you can substitute ground venison for the ground beef if you want or add sausage to the meat mixture.

ShaharThorne -> RE: A question for the gourmets out there (3/17/2014 6:25:08 AM)

ground beef over toast, kinda like chipped beef. Eggs should be optional.

DaddySatyr -> RE: A question for the gourmets out there (3/17/2014 6:27:50 AM)

I could never stand SOS. The chipped beef is just about as nasty as anything I've ever eaten.

ANYTHING other than chipped beef is an improvement.

For an alternative, why not try that manwich stuff on toast? I never eat it as a sandwich but as a "topping" for pasta or potatoes or even toast, I'll bet it would be terrific.

ok I will bite what is SOS??
I wont chew until I find it edible......

Also wondering the same thing! If it has 'SOS' in the title, it's risky eating! I'm presuming it's one of those quick to rustle up recipes which has standard ingredients?

It's chipped beef (spicy ham or some such {It always seemed like ham to me} in a nasty cream sauce) on toast (S)hit (O)n a (S)hingle.

It's standard US Army slop. It's awful.

Ms M:) you luverly lady:) hello again, long time no see hugs

thishereboi -> RE: A question for the gourmets out there (3/17/2014 6:45:48 AM)

My ex used either ground beef or sausage depending on what we could afford and put it over biscuits. I am not sure if it was proper or not but it tasted really good.

I have no idea where you were stationed, but in every mess hall I have been in, it was ground meat in a white gravy and was quite good, considering it was prepared in an army mess hall by army cooks who were rejected by every cooking school on the planet.

So for those who are asking what SOS is, here is the best description from my personal experience.

It is ground meat (army used beef) seasoned in a white gravy and served over toast.

My civilian version usually has a mixture of beef (lean ground chuck,) sausage and venison with a bit of butter to make the necessary grease for mixing with the four and milk to make the gravy.

Lucylastic -> RE: A question for the gourmets out there (3/17/2014 6:58:10 AM)

LOL AT DS's explanation:) that makes sense,
I cant remember a time Ive ever had meat and gravy of any kind on toast, but then again, im not averse to trying it....depending on whats in it:)
I do like sausage bacon, fried egg, and tomatoes on toast tho, so heh its all a matter of not knocking it tilll youve tried it ,,,,,for me:)

I was stationed in Ft. Ord, Ft. Huachuca, and Ft. By-God-Benning.

and this is what we had.

If it had been ground beef (not salted) it might have been somewhat more palatable but, I doubt it because the "cream sauce" was nasty, too.

ExquisiteStings -> RE: A question for the gourmets out there (3/17/2014 7:04:56 AM)

I've heard it was chipped beef on toast, sometimes made with that white gravy that's made with sausages and gets served with biscuits. It's ok, but I wouldn't label it a GRAND GOURMET delicacy.

Blonderfluff -> RE: A question for the gourmets out there (3/17/2014 7:07:39 AM)

What the heck is "white gravy". That CAN'T be good...

A white gravy is basically flour, milk and a bit of grease for flavor.

MissMorrigan -> RE: A question for the gourmets out there (3/17/2014 7:08:58 AM)

Ground beef in a cream sauce? Sounds repugnant. I have even greater respect for our servicemen/women now after hearing they are force-fed that stuff.

ETA: Why, oh why would anyone WANT to create this mess at home for their personal consumption. .. unless the OP is a sadist and going to make some poor unwitting sub/slaveling chow down on this?

Back when I would still eat pig meat, I rather liked biscuits and gravy but, I could just never develop a taste for SOS.

anniezz338 -> RE: A question for the gourmets out there (3/17/2014 9:40:15 AM)

It's pretty popular around here, except it is sausage and white gravy over biscuits.

That is sausage gravy in biscuits, a totally different animal entirely.

For making such a basic mistake in southern cuisine, your punishment is to scrapple for a month.

anniezz338 -> RE: A question for the gourmets out there (3/17/2014 10:04:51 AM)

If you really want to punish me, make me eat the chipped beef. [:'(]
