An Irish friend of mine used to grumble on Paddy's day "Feck, all the plastic Paddies are coming out again to get plastered!"

I've spent a few years in Dublin as a student, the locals had the same attitude towards St. Patrick's day as the locals in Munich have when it comes to the Octoberfest... You never hear people grumbling "Bloody tourists being drunk and puking everywhere" as much as then...

That's funny, and kind of what I figured.

I don't make a big deal about the day, myself.
As far back as I've traced, I have no Irish in me so absolutely no reason to celebrate or whatever the purpose for the holiday is.
Life itself is enough reason to drink.

And if you say that to an Irish bloke, he's going to offer you some Irish in you...

Irish soda bread (Joy of cooking)

Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.

Mix in a large bowl:

1 2/3 cups all-purpose flour
2 t double-acting baking powder
1/2 t baking soda
1/2 t salt
5 T sugar
1 cup raisins or currants (I used 2/3 C)
2 tsps caraway seeds

Mix in a medium bowl:

1/4 cup butter, melted
1 egg, beaten
1 cup buttermilk (I used 1/2 C sour cream and 1/2 C water)

Add wet ingredients to dry.

Bake:

I made 12 muffins, cooked for 20 minutes. I use muffin cups.

You can also pour into a greased loaf pan and cook for 45 minutes.

Erin Go Bragh!! With Flanagans in my ancestry, I guess I'd better go have a green beer tonight at the pub. Just one. Then I'm switching to diet cola.

I thought I was pretty good at finding the hidden dirty meanings, but you take it to a whole new level.
I didn't even catch that one.

FYI. Sounds like our Emerald Isle friends are a bit touchy about what we call the big day.

LO an irishman on my feed just posted this...

""Its just the amount of people who suddenly become Irish because their grandfather drank a bottle of Jamesons or their grandmother once ate a packet of Murphys crisps.""

Hmmm... I suspect mine may have eaten a potato or two.

And mayhaps did mine. Daddy Satyr is right, perhaps I get a mite touchy about it, but St. Patrick's Day (never 'St. Patty's in my house), was always observed more quietly. When I was little, mom made me go to Mass, and my dad would abstain from drinking at all that day.

Well, the short form for Patrick (or Pádraig sounds like Porrick) is Paddy, Pattty would be a feminized form and I can't see that going over well...

FR~

No Irish ancestry in this house either.

Direct Welsh descendant (traceable back to the original Pikemen) with a smidge of 10th century German mercenary.
The OH has Scottish traces.

Meh. Who cares??
Any excuse for a good piss-up is Ok in my books

First heard at McGuire's Irish Pub back in the late 1970s. It was used by the owner to announce "last call".

I have never ever celebrated St Patricks Day. No idea why. Lol. Most of the time I didn't even KNOW it was St Pat's until someone pinched me for not wearing green.
I didn't know it was today until I saw this thread.
