Angry. Furious. Completely p*ed off. Amazon Kindle just removed THOUSANDS of BDSM books from the Kindle store. They already removed the taboo subjects months or years ago (and quite right too, when it comes to underage etc etc), but now thousands of BDSM books have gone too. It's ridiculous. It's ludicrous. It's an infringement of basic human right of free expression, art, literature for both readers and authors. So, apart from wanting to have a rant here, there and in every other forum that will give me space to rant, I wanted to let you all know that YOU DON'T HAVE TO BUY FROM THE KINDLE STORE TO READ A BOOK ON YOUR KINDLE** Other ebook retailers can sell you a version that can easily be downloaded onto your Kindle. And other retailers (including A1AdulteBooks, Smashwords, AdulteBookshop and many others) still have ALL the books that Amazon has banned. Hold on a second, it's not an infringement of a basic human right, they aren't stopping anybody from reading or writing BDSM stories, they are just not selling them, which is their right as they own the store. I don't like it as it's a step back towards being prude, but to call it an infringement of a basic human right is ridiculous. They aren't trying to outlaw them, it's a bit stupid as they are cutting down their own revenue, I doubt Amazon is interested in morality, so there must be a commercial reason for them, maybe they had too many complains?

I only buy books from Amazon if none of the three library systems to which I have access do not carry them. I don't support Amazon's decision (but don't see it as a human rights issue) - was there an announcement?

FR You're just pissed off because you lost a revenue stream. Sucks to be you. Amazon isn't required to give you a forum to peddle your wares. They never were.

I got a kindle, I use it as a book end, real books are the future, you heard it here 1st ;-)

I want a Kindle...[:(] But can't justify buying something my phone and laptop already do... You have every right to be pissed off. Someone screws with my livelihood or past time, I don't exactly bend over and say, "thank you sir may I have another" either. However at the end of the day, it's their company, and if they feel it's a good move for them, I'm afraid your right to be personally pissed off is just about all you've got. It's their house, sure they kick you out and it must suck. I'd say this post constitutes a healthy egging of their front door. Best of luck finding another place more accommodating!

Critical thinking here: I just looked up BDSM Kindle books, and there are over 3,000. So perhaps it isn't a censorship on the subject, but books that aren't selling. I am not saying that is the reason in your particular case. You aren't an author I have any familiarity with, but you should know that trimming product lines happens all the time. I can't tell you the number of times I have found a favorite shampoo, and the company decides not to manufacture it anymore or kills an acquired brand (Max Factor), and now I have to find a new favorite shampoo or say goodbye to my auburn mascara.

I was mad when Walmart stopped carrying a certain deodorant. The associate pointed out a great replacement which I can use without breaking out in a rash. Sure it costed a few more cents but it works great. So quit pouting like a baby and find a way to sell your product. Amazon don't owe you a damn thing.

Honestly, I can understand her frustration, and Amazon and a lot of companies are acting like they are our moral guardians (like effing Walmart with CDs that have swear words), I was more taking offense that she called it censorship, because that's really not it.

Funny you should say that, LadyC. I just looked up the definition of censorship and found this: Censorship differs from editorial selection. For example, a publisher cannot usually publish all books presented to it, and a library cannot usually contain all books published. Consequently, they choose what to accept, either for its potential profitability, in the case of a for-profit book publisher, or according to its materials collection policy, in the case of a library. Since 50 Shades was so popular, and it WAS advertised quite a bit on Amazon, I don't think censorship or being moral guardians has anything to do with their trimming down their selection. It most likely was just taking out the books that weren't selling. Even the public libraries clean out their shelves periodically (no pun intended) to make room for new ones.

Well, it is frustrating for a writer and she wanted to vent. I possibly overreacted but I hate the word censorship being misused, real censorship is a pretty serious thing.

It wasn't censorship at all, but "editorial selection".

It could also have something to do with the content of her books. Credit card companies put limits on certain topics (scat, pseudo-incest such as between step- or adopted siblings, etc.), so Amazon is likely to pull anything that violates those rules. Considering that I also found Comfort Food by Kitty Thomas, which involves abduction and a whole lot of dubious consent, and a disturbingly vast array of dinosaur erotica (yep, you read that right), I think it's pretty safe to conclude that there's no censorship going on here.
