Hopefully this post works the way I'm hoping..

There are so many books out that under the guise of BDSM, I would like to start, let's call it a book club, where people can review books they have read. It can be tough finding good [a subjective term] books about the subject, and that is what I'm hoping I can accomplish with this thread

If I can manage, I'll try editing the first post so that a list is formed of all the books that have been reviewed. Don't worry if it has been reviewed, multiple reviews are always welcome!!

To start the thread off, I'll start with a list of books that I've found elsewhere [I haven't read them though]. I will also try keeping the the list in alphabetical order

Beauty's .. [Anne Rice] [series]
Fifty Shades [E.L. James] [series]
Masters of the Shadowlands [Cherise Sinclair] [series]
Nine and a Half Week [Elizabeth McNeill]
Pony Tales [C.P. Mandara] [series]
Power Exchange [A.J. Rose] [series]
Sweet .. [Maya Banks] [series]
The .. [Tara Sue Me] [series]
The Dom of My Dreams [M.F. Sinclair]
The One Worth Finding [Terese Silberstern]

Are we supposed to add books to the list for people to comment on? If so, are they all supposed to be fiction? It looks like it kind of. If not, among others I'd be curious about:

Control Your Submissive Boy: 150 Ways for the New Domme to Master Her Man (Raven Michaels Lockhart)
The Sexually Dominant Woman: A workbook for Nervous Beginners (Lady Green)

There is already a thread that discusses BDSM books. It looked to me to be all non-fiction, so yes, this thread is about fiction

As for books that people are curious about, I could create an area on the main post for books that people would like comments on.. Normally if I'm interested in a book, I look at the negative reviews at Amazon, but there is no telling why the person didn't like the book. At least here, we know that people are at least aware of many different fetishes, so a negative review would be because of bad writing, bad plot development, etc

Well I'll start some reviews:
The Beauty series is fairly well written. It is, however, almost entirely homosexual when it comes to the male slaves - just not my cup of tea. I am neither homosexual nor submissive.

Fifty Shades is a waste of paper. The storyline is archaic, the writing is painful to read, the characters are utterly unbelievable and inane, the D/s is uninformed. The writing style could only be enjoyed by teenage girls who lack any sort of sophistication. Basically I could get a better book by allowing my cat to walk on the keyboard.

I haven't read the rest. You also missed one of the most famous BDSM novels: The Story of O.

I have read The Beauty series as well, but didn't enjoy it. After a certain point, the books no longer become about Beauty [from the Sleeping Beauty fairytale], which makes it a little frustrating. If the books are titled as such, you would think that nearly every single page would be about her, but that's not the case.

Also, while I don't know much about Gorean/Gor, I have heard, and did look it up to make sure I had some idea, that the books seem to be of this subgenre. According to Wikipedia, for those who aren't familiar with the genre, Gorean is [in relation to BDSM], "The majority of Goreans who pursue a "lifestyle" approach often do not consider what they do to be BDSM. However, they are generally considered part of the "kinky" subculture. In that context, they reject the idea of isolated "scenes". Instead, their practices may be described as 24/7, dominance & submission, and/or Total Power Exchange relationships. BDSM concepts of servitude and slavery typically play a key role in Gorean dynamics." It could be that since I'm not interested in Gorean things, that this is why I didn't like the books. Some things that happened in the book were: the use of human ponies, clit removal, anal fisting of male slaves, and objectification [using humans as pieces of art].

One review, from Amazon, that I found to be accurate included, "Also, Rice seems to have included any notion that struck her as "erotic" at the time, without stopping to consider the real-world implications. "Dear god, who knew that Ms. Rice had such a disgustingly vast knowledge of sexual torture", one review asked: well, she DOESN'T. She has no idea what she's writing about: Anne Rice is completely ignorant, irresponsibly so, about her subject matter. What we see in the "Hall of Punishments", to give one specific example, would cripple or kill a human being within a very few hours, although we're told that "punishments" are not to cause injury, only pain."[1].. I think the reviewer forgot to provide the example, but it may have involved mounting a male slave on a marble statue [with an erect penis], overnight, most likely without the use of ropes or straps.. Another review that I liked, "And 99 percent of this sex is not even consensual, and some of the things they engage in were actually dangerous - like being suspended from a beam, or never being allowed to walk and forced to crawl on hard stone floors, which would leave their knees in ruin at the end of their tenure."[2]

First off: never expect realism from erotic novels. Realistic porn doesn't exist because it'll never get published. You'll have more luck hunting leprechauns.

The people who consider themselves Gorean are in denial that their lifestyle is not part of BDSM. Specifically the D/S part in the middle of BDSM. The writing is highly repetitive and is intended to titillate the reader and not to tell a story. I enjoy them, occasionally, but it is not good writing. Here is a good parody that accurately shows his writing skills.

You need to remember that novels are fantasy. No one ever has to go to the bathroom during the middle of a battle, no one ever get's thirsty in the middle of sex, no one ever says the wrong thing at the wrong time - unless it advances the story.

Erotica is simply porn with a story.

Please note that I said that the Beauty series was "fairly well written" and not "well written."

I am someone who has a fairly extensive collection of erotica.
Of genres, I have about the same number of volumes in erotica and poetry.

Since [my] One found me here over 5 years ago, it interests me less and less.
Real (as messy and inconvenient it sometimes is), trumps fiction and fantasy for me.

But if you are looking to supplement your collection, things edited by Rachel Bussel or Alison Tyler are volumes you may enjoy.
They do sometimes reuse stories across different themes.
Additionally, Violet Blue has a few good anthologies.
N. T. Morley put out the Master/slave anthology and my personal favorite is probably Any 2 People Kissing by Kate Dominic.
Black Lace books often have BDSM elements.

I think there is a place for fantasy, but one can quickly become very disillusioned if you have any expectations that real life could be like that.
