I launched a high altitude weather balloon with my 14yo daughter for her Science Fair project.
We sent it aloft Saturday, March 22 at 11:09am from Braidwood, IL. We got 5 good data points from the GPS/cell phone tracking system and then nothing.
I hope it came back down in intact as we had 3 cameras running. We used 2 different web sites for trajectory prediction - they both said it should land somewhere
in the northern 1/2 of Indiana, maybe around Rochester.

There is a contact number laminated to the top of the cooler - I'm hopeful someone will find it and drop a dime.

I am offering a reward and shipping costs for safe recovery.

~Dave

Dave, if that is a minor, the pic might get yanked...just warning you.

I still call my daughter Lizard even though she is 19.

Good luck finding your balloon, but yeah, the photo needs to go if that is your daughter in it.

I'd be interested to know how far it went.

If you haven't done so already, I'd post on Facebook and ask others share the post, assuming you or someone close to you has an account.

I remember doing something in grade school involving a balloon and letter. Nothing near as technical as what you did. Still, it was always exciting to think of where it went.

Hope you get the balloon back!

I don't think that violates TOS. It's about as far from a compromising situation as you can get (unless you have a weather-balloon fetish, that is). But I could be wrong as well.

ETA: I am wrong. Section 5.2.1. states otherwise. While it's a harmless pic, according to TOS, it's gotta go. You should post a pic of the payload instead. Chances are, that's all that's left anyway, since the balloon is probably shredded by now.

balloon fetish.....uummmmm it's all in the squeak, and the anticipation of the POP! [;)]

only joking, that balloon squeak freaks me out a bit [:@]

After speaking with the OP, I have modified the picture.

Keep us posted, Dave!

Good luck.

BTW... Yes, there IS such a thing as a balloon fetish.

As to why you lost the signal with a cell/gps tracking system... cell towers are directional and you rapidly lose signal at altitude.

Good plain language explanation from a Canadian test of cellphones in general aviation aircraft:
http://www.datasync.com/~rsf1/cell-air.htm

Commercial radiosondes (geek name for transmitting weather balloon) use a frequencies that can bounce on the ionosphere and the signal can be pulled out at distance.

If the batteries in your electronics survive the freezing temperatures; you may get more data when it comes back down below 8000 feet.

I hope someone amenable to contacting you finds it when it comes to ground.

What are the odds of a fellow kinkster living in the northern 1/2 of IN and just happens to be a pilot who flies around in that area...?

It's been over 3 days and not so much as a peep from the cell phone. Nor has anyone called to say they found the cooler.

As for a balloon fetish, I've seen videos where a person somehow works herself INTO an inflated balloon - I thought they were pretty cool. And just in case any of you are wondering, the opening of the balloon is 1.25". I used about 4 different adapters and a 10' length of 1/2"ID tube to get form the inflator nozzle (designed for party balloons) up to the balloon opening. It took me the better part of an hour at the local Menard's to put that bit together.

Look, I am so sick with this chest crap that I haven't seen myself.

You got the crud, Jeff?

It could be that it went down somewhere hard to get to, like deep woods, or maybe it's sitting in a pond or lake right now. Or perhaps a total idiot found it, said 'Hey! Free cooler!' and tossed/kept the rest of the gear inside without thinking or caring what I meant. It may turn up in the next few days/weeks/months. Everything inside is waterproofed and labelled, right?
