FR Haunting and moving. Many thanks, Butch. I generally dislike colorization, but here it worked well. It was particularly striking in the "Negro Auctions" photo, which I'd seen before in black and white.

Very good, I wish they could do the colours a bit more accurately, some of them still look a little unnatural.

fr Wow thank you, I really enjoyed that. I like black and white photography but the colours really bring things to life for me. I must not have a very good visual imagination because it feels much more real and relatable in colour. Aries - I know what you mean. I wonder if they were done by different people. It looks like some were going for realism and others were perhaps trying to capture the shades from early colour photography. I wish I had the skills to do this. I have one or two photos I'd love to see in colour.

Its not easy to colorize and be realistic. Grayscale photos of course are made of various shades of gray. The problem is the same luminosity or shade of gray can represent many different colors...So unless you know for sure the original color it is easy to get it wrong. For instance red and green cannot be more different when pure and placed side by side but their luminosity is exactly the same. So looking at a grayscale photo there is no way of knowing what is green or red. This really shows up when doing facial tones. most retouchers use a flesh tone that is 3 times the magenta as cyan and a third more yellow than magenta as a starting point. But this is still one color... but flesh tones are not one color... your face has red and blue and green and yellow among others. This variation gives the flesh depth yet when the luminosity is the same or close there is no way to tell what color goes where. And a single color looks flat but is often the only option. I'd be glad to give one of your grayscales a try if you want to send it to me,,,can't hurt it anyway. Butch
