ORIGINAL: jlf1961 Well, considering there is geologic evidence that parts of all the islands have fallen into the ocean, I would suggest a large inflatable life raft, emergency locator beacon, and thirty days of survival rations (should be in the life boat already.) Thanks Jeff. I'll ask Huck to put that in HIS bag! Seriously, you need to spend a few days on the big island and surf the north shore. Remarkably bad idea. Hawaii has few actual beaches, very tourist unfriendly ocean on the N side. Towards Kona is sandy a few places, A-bay . . . . Any overhead surf is stupid for the naive to venture into. Hawaii Big is 20 to 50ft. faces. BI is mostly lava shores, dangerous for the locals, fatal to others if there is any swell running. W Maui/Kaanapali has some very friendly beaches, but ASK the lifeguards. Much of the condo area is lava shelf, sharp as knives. Some Maui/Kaanapali beaches look just like the others but are seriously dangerous with any wave action. Walking out on wet lava with any surf happening is often fatal. Just don't. Kawaihae Harbor has a local small wave at times. Hapuna Park is fun snorkling when Flat, kills people when the shorebreak is over a few ft. Sort of a really long Sandy Beach. OUCH! Get local knowledge from surf and dive shops for safe diving, stay away from the famous waves. Maui is more than enough for any one vacation. Save Hawaii for another trip. Lahaina town/harbor area is polluted water, I wouldn't/didn't get wet there unless the waves are superb. Out of the town the sewage isn't all moving underground with the water table. Anywhere you swim or dive have fresh water to wash out your ears to prevent ear infections. Let dry in the wind. NO soap in the ears at night, sleeping on wet or soapy ears means a tooth ache inside your brain by morning. It goes away with treatment, about the time you land back home.
