Epiphany43, we will stay in Kehei. Any restaurant recommendations? Do you know the locals' favorites?

Take Meeeeeeeeee

Okay, barring that, pack half the clothes you want to bring + a zip bag of Tide detergent pods. Put a wash in each night, and you'll never have to worry about clothes, won't pack a 50 lb. suitcase, and you'll have room to take home souvenirs.

DomMeinCT, HI! Long time no see! Maybe we should just have a CM meet and greet in Maui?

ShaharThorne -> RE: Packing For Maui (4/7/2014 3:05:46 AM)

I wanna go too! I know I can handle the hiking now (Aylee and CountrySong put me on a death march in the zoo Friday while visiting me). That is a good idea about taking the Tide pods for laundry.

MasterCaneman -> RE: Packing For Maui (4/7/2014 6:19:12 AM)

In the past, I've used some of the ideas mentioned on this site. Some may be extreme, but it may be helpful: http://www.onebag.com/

MistressDarkArt -> RE: Packing For Maui (4/7/2014 12:17:28 PM)

MC, that was an AWESOME site!! Thanks!

I got a kick out of the (female) model showing the many ways to wear a man's shirt: http://www.onebag.com/useful-packing-tips.html

Does that make me a cross dresser? [8D]

Limit your wardrobe to two neutral colors (like black and white) and one accent color. That way everything is mix-and-match and will go with everything else.

OsideGirl -> RE: Packing For Maui (4/7/2014 12:50:15 PM)

FYI: There's a CostCo right by the airport in Maui. If you have a kitchen, I found it's easy to grab breakfast and lunch stuff at Costco..and then go out for dinner.

jlf1961 -> RE: Packing For Maui (4/7/2014 1:14:19 PM)

Well, considering there is geologic evidence that parts of all the islands have fallen into the ocean, I would suggest a large inflatable life raft, emergency locator beacon, and thirty days of survival rations (should be in the life boat already.)

The above is only required if you have my kind of luck (when I was a truck driver I got snowed in once, in Atlanta GA!)

For surfing:

Wetsuit, just to cover torso and crotch, water temps are fairly mild, but can be cold if you come from say, the Florida keys.
Lots of Sunscreen.
Avoid the flowerdy Hawaiian shirts, they will Know you are tourists.
UV rated sunglasses.
Sandals or canvas sneakers (do they even make these anymore?) These are good for walking or on decks if you plan to do any sailing.

Should finances and time permit, if you learn to surf, a trip to the north shore of the big Island is a must, you may be able to catch the last big waves of the season.

Check! MC's one bag site had a great video on a million looks from just 5 items. And I know not to wear white since that is the sure mark of touri. Have nothing white, anyway. I'm always playing in the dirt! [8D]

Thanks Jeff. I'll ask Huck to put that in HIS bag!

That's pretty much the plan! I can't do more than 1 large meal a day, and tend to eat lightly outside that. By the time I get up and start getting hungry, Huck's had breakfast several hours before.

kalikshama -> RE: Packing For Maui (4/7/2014 2:14:04 PM)

Have fun!!!

Seriously, you need to spend a few days on the big island and surf the north shore.

MistressDarkArt -> RE: Packing For Maui (4/7/2014 2:56:23 PM)

That'd be great if we were surfers and had more time.

Remarkably bad idea. Hawaii has few actual beaches, very tourist unfriendly ocean on the N side. Towards Kona is sandy a few places, A-bay . . . . Any overhead surf is stupid for the naive to venture into. Hawaii Big is 20 to 50ft. faces. BI is mostly lava shores, dangerous for the locals, fatal to others if there is any swell running. W Maui/Kaanapali has some very friendly beaches, but ASK the lifeguards. Much of the condo area is lava shelf, sharp as knives. Some Maui/Kaanapali beaches look just like the others but are seriously dangerous with any wave action. Walking out on wet lava with any surf happening is often fatal. Just don't.
Kawaihae Harbor has a local small wave at times. Hapuna Park is fun snorkling when Flat, kills people when the shorebreak is over a few ft. Sort of a really long Sandy Beach. OUCH! Get local knowledge from surf and dive shops for safe diving, stay away from the famous waves.
Maui is more than enough for any one vacation. Save Hawaii for another trip. Lahaina town/harbor area is polluted water, I wouldn't/didn't get wet there unless the waves are superb. Out of the town the sewage isn't all moving underground with the water table. Anywhere you swim or dive have fresh water to wash out your ears to prevent ear infections. Let dry in the wind. NO soap in the ears at night, sleeping on wet or soapy ears means a tooth ache inside your brain by morning. It goes away with treatment, about the time you land back home.

Is that even possible for a woman? Every female I've ever dated has managed to relieve me of at least one article of clothing (usually concert T-shirts), so if that's the criteria, there's a whole world full of 'em now. My current squeeze has at least five of my good shirts she's claimed for her own now.

Heh, don't let her see the video above! She'll be into all your dress shirts for the rest of your natural lives!

Thanks for the reminder to have peroxide/alcohol on hand after swims. I forgot about that.

MistressDarkArt -> RE: Packing For Maui (4/7/2014 7:28:48 PM)

OK, we are booked and going.

If anyone is going to be near our 'home base' Kihei area the last week of this month and might like to meet up for (non-play) activities, you're welcome to CMail!

Huck wants to spend several days in Maui later this month. Anticipated activities are hiking, beach/snorkeling and sailing, luau, a nice Sunday brunch, possibly biking down Haleakala. We'd be in a condo w/kitchen. Hopefully there will be a washing machine. We will have a rental car to shop if needed.

It's been 25 years since I've been there. I tend to over-pack and always regret schlepping a bunch of extra stuff. This time I want to travel light. Seasoned travelers, I'd appreciate input of what to bring and NOT BRING!

Thanks all! <3

You're serious? You came on to CM to actually ask people here what not to pack for a trip to (anywhere)?

I've been meaning to ask people here if it's appropriate to pick my nose in front of my future in laws...this may actually (finally) be the most appropriate time....any advice?
