smileforme50 -> Venting a pet peeve.... (4/8/2014 7:49:29 PM)

There's a TV show I've seen advertised called "Marriage Boot Camp"....I haven't watched it, and don't really intend to because I can't stand "reality TV". But it basically looks like a bunch of couples fighting.

The episode they are advertising this week says that the couples will be "spending the night with someone else"

Ok...maybe I'm just really tired and in a bad mood....but I gotta ask....every single time I see something like this on TV they call it a "wife swap". This drives me crazy....why do they call it a WIFE swap? Isn't it actually a SPOUSE swap? Aren't the husbands being "swapped" too? How can they have a "wife swap" without having a "husband swap" too?

MasterCaneman -> RE: Venting a pet peeve.... (4/8/2014 8:22:28 PM)

Because the majority of TV execs are male, and would be a wuss move to call it that.

DesFIP -> RE: Venting a pet peeve.... (4/8/2014 8:23:54 PM)

Because when swinging became more common in the 70s it was referred to as wife swapping.

Shrugs. Let's face it, if anybody in either couple has any reservations about swapping its likely to be one of the wives. Besides I doubt any sex is had, talked about. So I don't consider it swapping.

That's my other pet peeve about it. It's not even "swapping" in the sense that everyone thinks about it to begin with and they are just using the term as a temptation to get people to watch. But even then....it's still SPOUSE swapping and not wife swapping.

DaddySatyr -> RE: Venting a pet peeve.... (4/9/2014 3:25:11 AM)

Actually, I DESPISE reality TV but, I happened onto the second episode and I have to say that their advertising is a little facocta.

Yes. There is some fighting/arguing but the bulk of the show is exercises, designed to help these couples.

I think most of them are hopeless but there's one couple that seems to really be moving forward. The guy was a dead-drunk that hasn't had a drop since the second episode.

On the subject of "swapping": I think your assumption is correct in that if wives are being swapped, so are husbands.

I didn't see the commercial that you're referring to but, having watched last week's episode, I can tell you that it appeared to me that the exercise is more about trying to break down the barriers that some of the other people have.

In other words: Couple A thinks the female in Couple C is an idiot. The wife from Couple A gets to spend some time with the husband from Couple C and maybe gets a new (lady's) perspective about how difficult he is to deal with.

I swear I haven't watched reality TV since COPS was in it's fourth or fifth season but this show is really surprising me.

Screen captures still RULE! Ya feel me?

My man and I have been together a year January and have yet to have our first fight :)

He doesn't make the mistake of invalidating me.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swinging_(sexual_practice)

The term "swinging" is more commonly used instead of the older term wife swapping which has been criticized for being androcentric, for presuming that the partners are a married heterosexual couple, and for presuming that it is the male who is in control of the sexual activities. Additionally, the term "wife swapping" or "partner swapping" is criticized for not accurately describing the full range of sexual activities in which both singles or couples may engage,[3] which is not limited to conventional sex with a person other than their regular sex partner.

They're part of the "sanctity of marriage" that's under siege from gay couples. [;)]

DaddySatyr -> RE: Venting a pet peeve.... (4/9/2014 2:30:36 PM)

Well, just to be clear: "Marriage Boot Camp" is sort of a spin-off from a show called "Bridezillas"

Now, I have to admit that my first reaction to hearing about the show (Boot Camp) and why I only "stumbled on to it" was because I always figured that any guy who is engaged and gets approached by producers of a show called "Bridezillas" and doesn't break the engagement, pretty much deserves what they get.

I find it hard to have sympathy for a guy that makes that decision.

Ok, I'll even admit to watching Bridezillas on a few occasions. It's one of the reason I avoid the drama-packed reality shows. Except for Dance Moms, just can't let that one go, lol.

LOL....I agree with you 100%. It always drove me crazy to think...."How do these women....these "Bridezillaa" find someone who wants to marry them to begin with? (And WTF is MY problem??? LOL)

I DESPISE reality TV....heck....I've never even watched "Dancing With the Stars" or "American Idol"

I really wish there was a LIKE button, right now :D

DaddySatyr -> RE: Venting a pet peeve.... (4/10/2014 3:41:08 AM)

In fairness, I don't see the two shows you mentioned as "reality TV". Of course, I don't see "reality TV" as truly being reality because everyone knows they're on cam.

In the interest of transparency, I will admit to having watched a season of DWTS in the past (The season with Neicy?) and I am an absolute fan of "The Voice". I even record it because I have band rehearsal on Tuesday nights.

I never liked the term "reality" in describing that type of programming, either. God help us all if that's what it really was.

I have to say, though, with the new judging panel on AI, especially Harry Connick, Jr., and the surprisingly good caliber of the contestants this year, the show is really entertaining, IMO.

Culdron -> RE: Venting a pet peeve.... (4/12/2014 7:37:55 AM)

For a while I worked in a bridal salon who had had one of the brides from bridezillas get their dress from there. Every one of the people who had met her said how nice and sweet she was. That she was much nicer than a lot of the regular customers. Those shows are just as produced as anything else, just done in such a way to look the most dramatic.

Spiritedsub2 -> RE: Venting a pet peeve.... (4/12/2014 8:56:15 AM)

A friend of mine has an ex who was a bride on Bridezillas. She told him it was entirely faked.
