The March Gallup poll found 59 percent personally worry about “the economy” a great deal; 58 percent said they worry about “federal spending and the deficit,” 57 percent “the availability and affordability of health care,” 49 percent “unemployment,” and 48 percent “the size and power of the federal government.” Rarely will you find a political environment as golden for a Republican policy agenda as this one. Bottom three issues: Quality of the Environment. Climate change. Race relations. This is why dimocrats have desperately been manufacturing issues, as an attempt to avoid a conversation on the big 5 issues. Minimum wage. Immigration. Gender Gap. blah blah blah blah. All are attempts by the administration and a lap dog media to avoid do anything possible to avoid having discussions on the big issues. Because they know they are on the wrong side of those issues.

What you may see as a big issue isn't what other people see as big issues. Gender inequality are a problem for those who feel its impacts, same for immigrants, and many people in your country feel the squeeze of the minimum wage. While I agree that quality of the environment and climate change are serious issues, there's more problems than just those you deem as "important." Your opinion on these issues isn't golden, and there's more problems created by your own party than you're willing to admit.

And that Democrats are the ones trying to help them out of a host of tough spots. Theirs is not the party that almost shutdown the US Government over demanding a law be removed...or else! Nor are they the ones that created the financial fallout that President Obama inherited. Healthcare is improving for many Americans, thanks to the President and Democrats. The people that vote Republican/Tea Party come from a group called 'the low information voter'. These folks have no clue what they are babbling about on any issue. All in all, comes down to which of the possible candidates will do the best for the nation. All the conservatives, tea baggers and libertarians will vote Republican, and the liberals and moderates will choose Hillary Clinton. So, Hillary will be our next President for eight years. The Republicans will gain some seats in the House and Senate in the mid-term only to loose them and many more in the general election in 2016. 2017, we'll see a much better detailed and well oiled ACA that helps Americans even more, at a better cost. Republican/Tea Partiers will be at $9,182 failed attempts to repeal the ACA or the funding for it.

Actually, the things listed as "important" were according to the results of the Gallup poll. The important topics, come early November, may very easily be completely different from a March Gallup poll, though. The only poll that really matters is the one tallied by the election committees from votes cast.

I'll acknowledge it was implied that the items for which the percentages were listed were higher than those described as the "bottom issues" (since no percentages were given for those), and that those listed were the top issues. A simple request for a link would have sufficed, though.

I think the major political parties and the media decide which are the "important" issues for the American people. The OP did not include a link, so there's no way to verify anything he's saying here, although usually such polls are presented as a multiple choice quiz (as opposed to fill-in-the-blank or essay questions). This would imply that there are only certain issues the public is allowed to care about. Obviously, "the economy" is going to be an important issue for both sides, as it is with every election. Part of the problem is how the media, academia, and the general public tend to compartmentalize issues as if to suggest that they are completely separate from each other and are not connected in any way. As a result, people tend to look at "issues" as being a bunch disconnected little pictures, and there seems to be great resistance to looking at the overall big picture.
