As crazy as the philosophy sounded, this group of prisoners used it to seduce and dominate a group of female guards. If you believe something messianic, that males are dominant and woman are submissive, this then becomes something seductive and hypnotic.
In this instance in Baltimore, it also helped the male prisoners' cause that so many men from the neighborhood were locked up and that so few good men existed on the outside.
Extreme attitudes can correspond well with extreme acts....
