No, "most" don't. I've never met an actual vegetarian who ate fish. I've known people who didn't eat red meat or poultry but who ate fish/seafood because they believed it was healthier, but I've never known a vegetarian (and I know quite a few) who ate fish.

I know more than a few vegetarians and none of them eat fish. There are lacto-vegetarians who eat/drink milk products and ovo-vegetarians who eat egg products, but I've never known a vegetarian to eat any meat-type animal product. What I don't understand is the ones who eat egg products because eggs are, after all, unborn chickens & poultry is a meat.

I am a relatively new vegetarian & last year I did eat a steelhead filet once. My landlord brought it home from a fishing trip & I figured I'd try it. It didn't harm me, but I don't foresee myself getting involved with eating any more fish. The reason that I stopped eating meat & a few other things--nightshades, to be precise--was because I'd read where giving it up would cause less inflammations of my joints & since I have pretty bad chronic arthritis pain, I figured it couldn't hurt. Pun intended. And the pain became a whole lot more manageable.

As to the whole ovo thing, the eggs that I eat are not fertilized so they will never turn into a chicken embryo. I tend to get my eggs from local farmers who have chickens. I prefer them unwashed, as then they are less likely to allow bacteria through the shell. I also eat plain yogurt & I want to learn how to make my own yogurt from local dairy farms who sell the raw milk that I was raised on. I don't trust store-bought foods, especially processed foods, because I don't trust the crap that's in them. So there you have it, one vegetarian's opinion.

PS: my sister calls herself a vegetarian because she only eats fish & poultry. I don't think anyone else considers her a vegetarian, however.

Call me old fashioned but I think that words should mean something.

I would never begin to tell someone that they can't label themselves in any way they like but ...

If I said: "I'm a homosexual" but I only have sex with women, wouldn't that make me either:

A) The worst homosexual male in history

B) Misinformed or misusing a word.

Vegetarians do NOT eat fish (or meat, or poultry). Some people who call themselves vegetarians do eat fish or poultry. Hence the confusion. But they are not vegetarians.

Surely it depends on the reason for being vegetarian? An egg isn't necessarily an unborn chicken since the eggs you get in the supermarket are unfertilized and would never grow into a chicken even if we didn't collect and eat them. If anything, they're sort of chicken periods (mmmm appetising). So it depends on the person's objection to meat as to whether an egg would be an issue.

OP a person who eats fish but no other type of meat is technically a pescetarian. It's possible they just call themselves vegetarian for simplicity's sake, since it's a better known term and it can be tedious explaining your dietary restrictions over and over again. Or, they could be misinformed, not entirely dedicated to vegetarianism, or just saying it to look cool. Depends who you're hanging out with.

As Athena says, technically, they're pescatorians, if you want to get anal. Most can't be bothered with pedantic subdividing like that (understandably, as life's too short), but pretty much all of them except for the most zealous vegans will eat some animal products. Vegetarian has, as a result, become a blanket term applied to people who avoid eating red meat, and often cut other stuff out of their diet as well.

Most of the vegetarians I've met have been pescatorians (fish eaters), and none have had an issue with eating eggs. This could be a cultural thing.

No. Most of the people who claim to be vegetarians that you've met have been pescatarians.

There was a mindset I use to bump up against here and there that basically said it wasn't cruel to eat fish because they didn't feel pain... It was very common, I would assume people here would have come across it.

No. Most of the people who claim to be vegetarians that you've met have been pescatarians.

The problem is, as moony stated, the line between what is 'considered' as vegetarian and what it actually means has been really blurred in recent years.
I know most 'proper' vegetarians and vegans do not like it, but the general 'bandwagon' of being a vegetarian has evolved into 'not meat-eating' and for some inexplicable reason, usually means that fish and other seafood isn't classified as meat and is therefore allowed.

That may be because of the origin of the word 'animal'.
quote:

ORIGINAL: From http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/animal
Origin:
1300–50; Middle English (< Old French ) < Latin, noun derivative (with loss of final vowel and shortening of ā ) of animāle, neuter of animālis living, animate, equivalent to anim ( a ) air, breath + -ālis -al1 ; E adj. also directly < Latin animālis
And because in the old (ignorant) days, it was considered that fish and seafood don't 'breathe' air as other animals do, that would exclude them from said definition of 'animals'.

Also, there are many reasons for people not eating meat and/or any animal products.
I have issues with people choosing vegetarianism based on cruelty grounds though.

Because most eggs are not fertilized and will never become chickens.

Only a fertilized egg is an unborn chicken.

And totally off topic: Linnaea! Haven't seen you on in years, welcome back.

Now, just to add to the confusion. Fish in Judaism is considered neither meat nor dairy. It is classed as neither and therefore may be served with either.

So a Jewish lacto-vegetarian can eat fish, but a gentile one can't, then?

I didn't say that. But a Jew may view fish as not being meat and therefore okay to eat in the same way that many people don't view eggs as meat unless they were fertilized.

Basically the term vegetarian means to some people no mammals or birds. To other it includes no avian or mammal by-products. The definition is fuzzy, like it or not. As evidenced by the fact that there are so many fish eaters who do call themselves vegetarian.

Vegan is a lot more closely defined. If someone calls themselves vegetarian and you propose to invite them over for a meal, the best thing you can do is ask exactly what they do or don't eat.

There's a word for those people. Wrong.

But I don't see why people are getting up in arms about what others call themselves. It doesn't affect you. When I've had vegetarians over, I would have a vegetable pilaf for those who are more fussy, and a broccoli quiche for those who are less. Otherwise, I don't care.
